How does thread vein removal work?
Thread veins are damaged veins that can appear anywhere on the skin’s surface and usually range in appearance and length. They are also known as spider veins, as they somewhat resemble the patterns of spider webs. Some thread veins can be red, blue or purple in colour and cause large, and small, lines that branch across the skin. Our thread vein removal works to eliminate unwanted spidery veins on the body – mainly using light-based energy – but we have a range of other technologies available. The intense light causes the vein to collapse and be gradually dissolved, and removed, by your immune system.

Pre-treatment advice and aftercare
Before having your first session of thread vein removal, you’ll always have a consultation with one of our expert clinicians. We create market-leading treatment plans and this all begins with an initial chat so you can find out more about your desired treatment, or be guided to the treatment which would have the biggest impact on you.
We offer laser, IPL, advanced electrolysis and sclerotherapy treatments, so your practitioner will help inform your decision on each one so you can choose the right treatment. They will then create for you an individualised plan – with your wants always at the centre of it – and craft the necessary pre and post treatment aftercare, product recommendations (like a high SPF) and essential do’s and don’ts before your first appointment. Although your practitioner will outline everything you have to do, here are some of the key ones:
We always advise that you do not expose the skin to UV rays, get sun burnt or use fake tan 1-2 weeks before your treatment. We unfortunately cannot perform thread vein removal treatment on recently tanned, or fake tanned, skin as the light energy used in IPL, laser and advanced electrolysis can cause adverse reactions, pigmentation issues and make the skin more sensitive than usual.
For advanced electrolysis on the facial area, we also advise that you temporarily stop using acid-based skincare products like retinol, hyaluronic, salicylic and glycolic acids 1-2 weeks before the treatment. Active skincare products can also cause increased sensitivity when undergoing electrolysis.
Before sclerotherapy, we advise that you do not apply any lotion on your treatment area and come into the clinic with clean, un-moisturised skin. Wearing loose clothing after the treatment can also help minimise contact with the injection sites, avoid infection and discomfort. If you are having sclerotherapy on your legs, bringing a spare set of shorts, or anything that exposes the treatment area, to wear during your session can help make you feel as comfortable as possible.
After laser, IPL or advanced electrolysis, the treatment advice is always the same. You must still not expose the treatment area to sunlight, fake tan or use active skincare ingredients until the skin heals, which can usually be within 7-14 days. We also recommend that you do not do any strenuous exercise immediately after the treatment or participate in water-related activities like swimming, steam rooms or saunas. We also advise that you take cool showers, or baths, for 24-48 hours. Your practitioner will identify the best products that will soothe, hydrate and speed up the healing process, so you can get back to your daily activities as soon as possible.
After sclerotherapy, moving around is essential in preventing the formation of blood clots. We also suggest that you wear a compression wrap that covers the treatment area after the treatment and aids circulation. Similarly to light-based treatments, avoiding strenuous exercise and sun exposure is also recommended whilst the skin heals which can be for up to 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Spidery thread veins are usually harmless and can appear because of many intrinsic and extrinsic reasons. Thread veins occur when the blood vessels become permanently dilated and this can be an intrinsic characteristic, one inherited through genetics, or as a result of hormone changes, or ageing skin. Age can cause the skin to become thinner and more translucent over the years, meaning the veins start to protrude and become more visible from beneath.
Certain lifestyle habits, such as being inactive, obese or excessively consuming alcohol and smoking, can also damage the veins and cause them to swell, and rise, to the epidermis.
Thread veins are also most commonly developed in women. As women undergo significant hormone changes during menstruation and pregnancy, these fluctuating levels can weaken the walls of the blood vessels which causes them to expand, break and become visible.
External factors, like sun damage, can also cause thread veins to occur as overexposure to harmful UV rays can break down collagen production and weaken the blood vessels.
As mentioned earlier, thread veins are usually harmless and are often removed because of aesthetic preferences. However, if you notice a change in your veins, or if they become bigger, painful, sore and disturb your sleep, you may have varicose veins and may benefit greatly from thread vein removal.
We offer five treatments for thread vein removal and these are: laser, IPL, advanced electrolysis and sclerotherapy. Below is more information on how each treatment works.
Laser and IPL thread removal works by targeting the unwanted veins using short bursts of concentrated light energy (either laser or broad spectrum light). This energy is then absorbed within the haemoglobin proteins that are naturally present in the blood vessels. As the haemoglobin absorbs the light energy, it is then converted into heat energy which causes the vein to collapse and be gradually broken down, and dispersed of, by the immune system.
Advanced electrolysis follows a similar methodology to laser and IPL treatments, however rather than using broad light energies, electrolysis works on a localised, focused level. The treatment involves using an ultra-fine probe that emits a short, but powerful, electrical current to the unwanted blood vessel. This current is then converted to heat energy to dissolve the visible vein. Like laser and IPL treatments, it is then gradually expelled by the immune system.
The final treatment we offer is sclerotherapy. This is an injectable treatment that eliminates spider veins by injecting a medical solution, called sclerosant, into the undesired vein and essentially shrinks them. Sclerosant is a clinically safe ingredient that causes cellular irritation within the blood vessels. Sclerotherapy also targets the reticular veins (meaning ‘network/net-like’ veins) that can feed onto, and facilitate, the formation of thread veins. By targeting these veins, this treatment helps to prevent the future development of spidery veins making it a more permanent option.
Of course! Every treatment we offer at DestinationSkin is safe for cosmetic and clinical distribution in the UK, and if it wasn’t, we would not offer them to our clients. To ensure your safety in everything we do, we only endorse the use of the highest quality, state-of-the-art equipment and machinery. Our staff, who will perform the treatment, are also members of reputable medical boards, like the General Medical Council, who are experienced in their treatment fields and have met the high clinical safety procedures we live by at DestinationSkin.
To completely remove thread veins, multiple treatments may be needed depending on the severity. During your consultation, your practitioner will examine your skin and formally recommend how many are required.
Some pain can be expected, but it should not be minimal. With all our treatments, no anaesthetic is needed and our laser, light and electrolysis devices are designed with cooling mechanisms to minimise pain. As sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment, you can expect the pain level of a typical injection.
Laser, IPL and electrolysis should not affect your daily activities too much and there is no downtime needed. All you’ll need to do is wait for the skin to heal, which can be from 7-14 days, and avoid active skincare products and exercise regimes for a minimum of 1-2 days. This is because during the laser, light and electrolysis treatment some epidermal sensitivity occurs. With sclerotherapy, you may need to wait a little longer before you go back to strenuous exercises – usually around 3-5 days.
Aside from that, you can get back to being you quickly with all our thread vein treatments!
With laser, electrolysis and IPL you can expect to see almost 80% removal of thread veins after a course of 1-3 treatments. With sclerotherapy, some patients have reported seeing a 90% reduction of large veins. All our treatments require a small amount of waiting time – around 2-6 weeks – but luckily, each treatment works to produce permanent results.
