How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Laser Hair Removal works by using a mix of both light and heat energy to destroy the hair follicles and permanently alter the hair growing environment. We use advanced laser devices that emit short bursts of light that can penetrate both the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin.

The laser waves work to target the visibly protruding hairs on the outer layer of skin – called the epidermis – but causes flawless hair removal by being able to reach deeply into skin where the hair follicle is located (the dermis). The light from the laser absorbs the pigmentation present in the individual hairs and is then converted to heat energy to damage the hair follicle and prevent future hair regrowth.

We use the science of hair growth cycles to target the hair in its most receptive stage. There are three main stages of hair regrowth: the anagen, catagen and telogen phases. The anagen phase is when the hair is dividing rapidly and is most visible. We aim to target the hair in this stage as when under the laser, the base of the hair follicle – which looks like a black bulb at the end of each hair – will remain whole and ensure permanent hair removal seamlessly.

Our knowledge of hair growth cycles enables us to achieve dramatic hair reduction in all our clients, where after your course of laser hair removal, you can expect regrowth to always be finer and lighter than before.

We provide additional training for all our staff members to maintain, and ensure, the highest safety procedures we live by at DestinationSkin are met to the fullest. Knowing all our staff are rigorously trained reassures us that our clients are in the safest hands.

The state-of-the-art hair removal technology we employ ensures we can treat all skin types. Each of our devices are fitted with advanced melanin readers and cooling technology to make each treatment personal, comfortable and perfect for you.

Pre-treatment advice and aftercare

Knowing how to prepare for laser hair removal the right way helps kick-start your progress and get well on the way to smooth skin.

The first step is to book your consultation and have a patch test with one of our expert laser clinicians. Once all the mandatory steps have been completed prior to your treatment, you can then prepare your skin for laser removal.

For the treatment to be effective, you should not remove your unwanted hair in any way. The hair needs to be visibly present in the hair follicle for the laser to be able to detect it.

Laser Hair Removal cannot be done on recently sun burnt or fake tanned skin as this can cause damage, reactions or may make the treatment unnecessarily painful.

Please be sure to avoid any active skincare ingredients in the weeks prior to the treatment (2-4 weeks). On the day, come into the clinic with the treatment area clean and without application of fragranced lotions or creams.

Antibiotics may increase photosensitivity when under the laser, so please disclose with your clinician any medications or treatment courses you’re on before your hair removal.

After the treatment, you can expect your skin to be a little more sensitive than usual with some hair still present – this is perfectly normal. The unwanted hair will then begin falling out. This shredding process usually takes one to two weeks after the treatment and after each treatment, you can usually expect 30% hair reduction. We usually recommend a treatment course of 6, 8 or 12, depending on your hair density. Once your course is completed you can expect 90% hair removal and a full aftercare plan of the best products for your skin, information and expert advice crafted by your practitioner.

The final thing is to just enjoy your newly smooth, hair–free skin!

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike traditional hair removal methods, like shaving and waxing, laser hair removal is one of the only methods that can help you achieve long lasting hair removal. You can expect to see up to 90% reduction of unwanted hair with each session causing future hair regrowth to be finer and lighter than before.

Other benefits of laser hair removal are:

  • It produces no rashes or ingrown hairs
  • Can be used on dark skin tones
  • It’s quick – an average session can take between 30 minutes to an hour (even less, depending on the area!)
  • Can help improve skin tone, texture and uneven pigmentation
  • An investment that pays off in the long run – no more purchases of razors, shaving creams, wax strips and depilatory creams
  • No regrowth irritation or itchiness
  • Can remove hair on many sensitive parts of the face and body
  • May help remove the appearance of varicose veins whilst targeting unwanted hair

Laser hair removal is able to target a range of areas on the face and body. Common laser treatment areas for women are:

  • Bikini laser hair removal: including Hollywood and Brazilian
  • Facial hair removal: includes the eyebrows, the upper lip, chin and lower face
  • Full body laser hair removal
  • Underarms
  • Legs: can be either full or lower leg hair removal

Some treatment areas of laser hair removal for men are:

  • Facial hair removal: including jawline, eyebrows, upper lip, ears, chin, lower face, neck and beard line
  • Full body: including chest, abdomen, arms, full legs, buttocks and pubic areas
  • Full back
  • Full Back, shoulder and upper arms
  • Underarms

Laser facial hair removal for men is growing in popularity, especially as it is able to sculpt, shape and create the illusion of definition easily. For women, it is especially useful for removing chin hair and stubborn upper lip hair that sometimes bleach just doesn’t hide!

Every laser treatment DestinationSkin is unique and we get to know you and your skin before undergoing any hair removal.

The Fitzpatrick Scale is widely used in dermatology and is the standard, renown scale used to classify skin types. This is how we pick the right laser device for you. Please note that laser hair removal is not effective on light, blonde, grey or red hairs. Electrolysis or IPL may be a better alternative to target any unwanted, lighter hair.
Fitzpatrick Scale
Type I: Very pale. Light eyes and hair. In the sun: prone to freckles, always burns and never tans
Type II: White, fair skin. Blonde or red hair. Light eyes. In the sun: prone to freckling and burns – tans minimally
Type III: Medium tanned skin. Light brown or hazel eyes. Dark blonde to light brown hair. In the sun: skin freckles, burns mildly – mostly tans
Type IV: Olive to light brown skin. Increased presence of melanin in the skin. In the sun: tans often, doesn’t freckle and burns minimally
Type V: Dark brown skin. Dark eyes and hair. Higher presence of melanin in the skin. In the sun: rarely burns, always tans
Type VI: Very brown skin. Brown eyes and hair. Very high presence of melanin in the skin. In the sun: skin never freckles or burns – tans darkly

We have three different types of laser devices, developed by healthcare brands Lumenis® and Cynosure® to optimise the wavelengths for ideal hair removal. These are:

Alexandrite: uses Cynosure’s Elite+™, a dual-wavelength system that is flexible and customisable, enabling the ability to switch between different wavelengths to target denser areas in one treatment.

Diode: uses Lumenis’ LightSheer® technology designed to treat most skin types, including darker and tanned skin tones (types IV -VI on the Fitzpatrick scale). Includes a cooling mechanism to minimise pain.

Nd:YAG: a long-pulsed laser device especially effective in removing ingrown hairs and preventing the recurrence of them. Can also help to improve varicose veins whilst removing hairs. This device is suitable to use on all skin tones.

Be sure to note that the best laser hair removal is always performed by qualified providers with fully regulated lasers – such as DestinationSkin. We do everything it takes to put your safety at the heart of our treatments.

Great developments in laser technology has made laser hair removal minimally uncomfortable. Most of our lasers are embedded with cooling mechanisms to ensure comfort. Usually clients describe a hot sensation experienced when having the treatment and the pain level similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

Hair removal prices can vary and usually we recommend a laser hair removal treatment course consisting of either 6, 8 or 12 sessions. Also, depending on the treatment area the cost of hair laser removal can fluctuate. Typically, single sessions are priced between £26 – £105.

Absolutely! Laser hair removal is one of the only treatments that can produce long lasting hair removal, with up to 90% reduction. The great thing about laser hair removal too is that after each session, hair regrowth is finer and lighter than before.

Yes, definitely. All treatments at DestinationSkin have undergone the rigorous safety tests necessary to ensure they are safe for distribution in the UK. The lasers used for the treatment are developed especially for aesthetic, cosmetic purposes where each laser device has undergone individual clinical tests to ensure they are safe for use on the skin and work to the highest safety practices.

It can be. The more courses of laser hair removal you have the more chance of permanently disturbing the hair follicle and hair growing environment. We recommend multiple treatments of laser hair removal as this is the most effective way of ensuring long term hairlessness. We also spread the treatments apart in order to target the hair when it’s in its most receptive, ideal stage of hair growth.

Once your hair removal course is complete, you can expect the treatment results to last indefinitely, with only minor hair regrowth in some cases. Usually it is recommended to get a maintenance treatment one to two years after your initial course completion to maintain the results.

An individual session of laser hair removal can take between 15 – 90 minutes. This however, is a rough guide and increases/decreases depending on the size of the treatment area and the amount of hair you want to remove.

Your expert laser clinician will be able to confirm treatment time, recommend course length and overall time to achieve 90% hair removal.

According to the NHS, there is no evidence to suggest that laser hair removal causes skin cancer.

Yes, for women with polycystic ovaries, laser hair removal can help to significantly reduce one of its main symptoms: excessive hair growth. Laser hair removal can be used to remove hair on the arms and face – most areas, in fact! It can help to reduce unwanted hair wherever it strikes.

Yes, tattooed areas are ineligible for laser hair removal. As the laser targets pigment, it is unable to differentiate between the hair follicle pigment and ink pigment. This could cause distortion, burns and fading of the body art.
