Common areas we treat for our male clients include the upper arms, back, chest, abdomen, eyebrows, beard and neck. Treating your beard line with laser hair removal can help stop ingrown hairs and prevent any skin sensitivity you might experience from regular shaving, whilst also creating a neat look shaped to your preference.

How does laser hair removal work?PlusMinus

Up to 40% off laser hair removalTo start with, let’s talk about the hair itself. All face and body hair goes through 3 distinct phases of growth: anagen, catagen & telogen. The anagen phase is when the hair is still attached to the blood supply and is fully pigmented, so laser hair removal provides the best results during this phase. On body areas, approximately 20% of the hairs are in the anagen phase at any time, which is why you will need a course of treatments for best results.

During each treatment we will target all of the hairs and it will be the ones in the anagen phase that should not grow back. The laser beam heats the hair, which in turn heats the follicle, destroying the blood supply and follicle cells.

Hair needs to have some colour to it to be treated with a laser; as such, darker and thicker hairs respond best to this treatment.

We use three different lasers in our clinics according to different skin and hair types: Diode, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG. Each comprises Lumenis and Cynosure Elite+ lasers.

What areas of my body can be treated?PlusMinus

At DestinationSkin we treat almost every area of the body. Common areas include the face, especially the cheeks and neck around the beard line, and the chest, back and shoulders.

There are some areas which we cannot treat, including under the eyebrows, inside the nostrils, over the nipple area and inside the ears.

What lasers do you use?PlusMinus

At DestinationSkin, we use 3 different makes and models of laser. Your skin and hair type will determine which model we will use for your treatment to get the best results for you. The models we use are:

  • The Lumenis Lightsheer Diode (810nm)
  • The Cynosure Alexandrite (755nm)
  • The Cynosure ND YAG (1064nm)

In your consultation, a hair assessment will be carried out to determine which laser will be best for your treatment to achieve the desired results safely, and effectively.

What results can I expect?PlusMinus

Over a course of treatments, expect permanent, visible results.. Hair follicles that are dormant or react with age or hormonal changes may reappear but will be lighter, finer and fewer in number.

The amount of hair will gradually reduce throughout the course and should fall from the skin two weeks after each treatment. Less hair will grow back each time and the results will improve with the number of courses you have. The number of treatments can vary on the individual person and the area being treated.

What should I do before laser hair removal treatment?PlusMinus

For laser hair removal to be effective, the hair needs to be present in the follicle. This means waxing, threading and tweezing must be avoided before the treatment. You’ll also need to avoid bleaching your hair as the laser needs pigmented follicles to target. We can’t treat anyone with a tan – real or fake. If you’re tanned, please contact your clinic at least 48 hours prior to your next appointment to seek advice on how you should proceed.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?PlusMinus

Multiple treatments are needed (between six and ten) because only the hair in the active growth phase – the Anagen phase – can be affected by the laser. Time is needed for hairs in the Catagen and Telogen phases to move into the Anagen phase. Effective results require treatments spread evenly and consistently, from four to eight weeks, depending on the face or body area.

For two days after the treatment, you must avoid perfumed products including lotions, shower gels, fake tan and deodorants. You must avoid using products with acids, retinol and exfoliating beads for at least a week to allow the skin to heal fully. We recommend that you use Australian Bodycare skinwash as this contains natural tea tree which is antiseptic, as well as the Australian Bodycare lotion to re-hydrate the skin and enhance the results of your treatment.

Q: is there anything I need to do after my laser hair removal treatments?
A: You may experience some reddening of the skin around where the hair used to be, which could last from a few minutes to 24 or 48 hours. For two days after each treatment, avoid exposure to the sun and don’t use the gym, saunas, steam rooms etc.

Q: Can I have laser hair removal if I have keloid scars?
A:  If you have keloid scars, or a predisposition to keloid scarring, we would assess the areas to be treated on a case by case basis. Keloid scars are a type of a scar that could be either red of purely white as a normal scar. This type of scar extends the original size of the wound, meaning that it expands the size of the injury.

Q: How do I know if I’m suitable?
A: We have the safest and most effective lasers which allow us to treat all skin types.

Q: Does laser hair removal hurt?
A: Our Cynosure Elite+ lasers treat the area with a cooling jet of air to keep you feeling comfortable during your laser hair removal treatments. Our Diode lasers have a chilled applicator and we also use a cooling gel to keep discomfort to a minimum. We can apply a local anaesthetic to the area if needed; however, you will get an idea of how the treatment feels during the initial test patch. If you are used to waxing, laser hair removal is often described as less painful.

Q: Can I have laser hair removal after receiving treatment for cancer?
A: If it is under a year since you have been all clear, you cannot have laser hair removal. If you have been clear for one to three years, you will need a letter from your specialist for us to pass on to our Medical Director for review. Unfortunately, if you have had any lymph nodes removed from under your arms or breasts, you can’t have laser hair removal under your arms, even if you are all clear.

Q: How is it different from other treatments?
A: Laser hair removal requires a short-term commitment to achieve long-term results. Results are not instantaneous but once your treatments have been completed, you won’t have to think about regular hair removal again.
