• IPL for Sun Damage

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment method we use to target signs of sun damage. IPL helps to promote collagen production within your skin, which aids hydration and heals damage. After IPL, your skin will:

    • Appear redefined, refreshed and more evenly toned
    • Signs of sun damage, such as uneven pigmentation and dark patches will be reduced

At DestinationSkin, we use IPL to break up and lighten deeper sun damage to create a more even skin tone. We also use IPL to coagulate the blood inside unsightly thread veins to make them disappear – you can read more about IPL for treating thread veins here if that is also of interest to you.

Why do I have sun damage or pigmentation?PlusMinus

Your skin will show signs of sun damage (freckles, darker patches) in relation to your exposure to daylight throughout the year. You can aim to reduce the damage your skin experiences from the sun by wearing a good SPF year round – even when it isn’t sunny! We stock a range of high quality SPFs in our online shop.

Pigmentation can be triggered by factors other than sun exposure, however. Hormonal fluctuations typically brought on by pregnancy or the contraceptive pill and thyroid problem can cause pigmentation in your skin. Pigmentation can also occur if your skin has been inflamed through other problems.

How does IPL work to treat sun damage?PlusMinus

During treatment, the IPL light is attracted to the dark areas in your skin, which makes it extremely effective for lighter skin types. As it hits the dark spots, the light shatters the pigmentation which encourages it to lift to the surface before gradually lightening over a number of treatments as your surface cells renew.

Will IPL work for my skin type?PlusMinus

IPL can be used on lighter skin types as it interacts with the excess pigment in the skin, and doesn’t interact with the natural skin colour. For darker skin types, we have alternative treatments that are equally as effective using different techniques. If you have darker skin and want to find the right treatment for your pigmentation, please send us an enquiry and we can suggest what might work for you.

What areas can be treated with IPL?PlusMinus

At DestinationSkin, the most commonly treated areas for are the face, hands and neck. However, we can also treat backs, shoulders and arms.

What sort of results can I expect from IPL?PlusMinus

You will get a more even skin tone after a single treatment, but we would recommend a complete course of multiple sessions (typically around 3 for IPL) to fully lift and lighten darker pigmentation. Depending on the depth of your pigmentation, your practitioner might prescribe a course of skin peels and homecare to work in conjunction with the IPL to improve really stubborn dark spots.

Pre-treatment advicePlusMinus

If your skin has been exposed to the sun within the 4 weeks prior to your treatment, let your practitioner know before your treatment. We can’t treat anyone with a tan – real or fake. If you’re tanned, please contact your clinic at least 48 hours prior to your next appointment to seek advice on how you should proceed.

You must stop any acid-based products such as Glycolic and Salicylic at least 1 – 2 weeks before each treatment.

If you have been prescribed or are taking any new medications or herbal supplements, or if anything medically changes let your practitioner know prior to your treatment.

Popular with celebrities, skin resurfacers & chemical skin peels, offer a far more effective solution to tackling pigmentation. Using active ingredients such as mandelic and azelaic acids help to bring pigmentation to the surface and supress further pigment from appearing, leaving you with a clearer, more even skin tone.

Using Intense Pulse light therapy, this proven technique is excellent at targeting pigment deep within the skin. The light effectively breaks down the darker patches causing pigmentation, encouraging them to shatter and disperse, revealing an even skin tone.
MICRO-NEEDLING (Genuine Dermaroller and Electronic Dermastamp)

A highly effective treatment using a small handheld device that triggers increased cell turnover helping to force the pigmentation damage to the surface of the skin, leaving a clearer more even skin tone.

Laser therapy is ideal for targeting stubborn pigmentation, presenting in the deeper layers of the skin. The laser works to shatter the pigmentation, bringing it to the surface and expelling it from the skin, revealing an even skin tone.

How many treatments will I need?PlusMinus

We often recommend between 3 to 6 treatments to achieve the desired results. Treatments will be spaced every 3-4 weeks, throughout the treatment course the pigment will begin to lighten and you will see a noticeable improvement in skin tone.

After the treatment, you must avoid perfumed products, make-up (excluding mineral make up), saunas, steam rooms and swimming for 2 days. You can wear mineral make-up immediately – available at your clinic – if you wish. You must avoid using products with acids, retinol and exfoliating beads for at least a week.

We recommend using Youngblood mineral cosmetics, and a psychical broad spectrum SPF such as Dermaquest Zinclear SPF to protect and prevent the further appearance of age spots. To enhance the results further we would recommend you use a product that will rebuild the skin’s collagen, such as DermaQuest’s 3D StemCell Complex.
