At DestinationSkin, we use IPL to break up and lighten deeper sun damage to create a more even skin tone. We also use the IPL to coagulate the blood inside unsightly thread veins to make them disappear.

How does it work?PlusMinus

Pigmentation can be caused by a number of factors such as exposure to daylight throughout the year (think freckles), hormonal fluctuations typically brought on by pregnancy or the contraceptive pill, thyroid problems, or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

The IPL light is attracted to dark areas in your skin, making it extremely effective for lighter skin types. As it hits the dark spots, the light shatters the pigmentation which encourages it to lift to the surface before gradually lightening over a number of treatments as your surface cells renew.

Will it work for my skin type?PlusMinus

IPL can be used on lighter skin types as it interacts with the excess pigment in the skin, and doesn’t interact with the natural skin colour. For darker skin types, we have alternative treatments that are equally as effective using different techniques,

What areas can be treated?PlusMinus

At DestinationSkin the most common areas for treatment are the face, hands and neck. However, we can also treat backs, shoulders and arms.

What sort of results can I expect?PlusMinus

You will get a more even skin tone after a single treatment, but we would recommend a course to fully lift & lighten darker pigmentation. Depending on the depth of your pigmentation, your practitioner might prescribe a course of skin peels and homecare to work in conjunction with the IPL to improve really stubborn dark spots.

Pre-treatment advicePlusMinus

If your skin has been exposed to the sun within 4 weeks before your treatment, let your practitioner know prior to your treatment. We can’t treat anyone with a tan – real or fake. If you’re tanned, please contact your clinic at least 48 hours prior to your next appointment to seek advice on how you should proceed.

You must stop any acid based products such as Glycolic and Salicylic at least 1 – 2 weeks before each treatment.

If you have been prescribed or are taking any new medications or herbal supplements, or if anything medically changes let your practitioner know prior to your treatment.

A thorough cleanse of your skin using cosmeceutical grade products specifically tailored to treat your concerns.

A quick non-invasive exfoliating treatment that removes dead skin cells to work on sun damaged skin and remove unwanted facial blemishes.

Popular with celebrities, skin resurfacers & chemical skin peels, offer a far more effective solution to tackling pigmentation. Using active ingredients such as mandelic and azelaic acids help to bring pigmentation to the surface and supress further pigment from appearing, leaving you with a clearer, more even skin tone.

Using Intense Pulse light therapy, this proven technique is excellent at targeting pigment deep within the skin. The light effectively breaks down the darker patches causing pigmentation, encouraging them to shatter and disperse, revealing an even skin tone.
MICRO-NEEDLING (Genuine Dermaroller and Electronic Dermastamp)

A highly effective treatment using a small handheld device that triggers increased cell turnover helping to force the pigmentation damage to the surface of the skin, leaving a clearer more even skin tone.

Laser therapy is ideal for targeting stubborn pigmentation, presenting in the deeper layers of the skin. The laser works to shatter the pigmentation, bringing it to the surface and expelling it from the skin, revealing an even skin tone.

How many treatments will I need?PlusMinus

We often recommend between 3 to 6 treatments to achieve the desired results. Treatments will be spaced every 3-4 weeks, throughout the treatment course the pigment will begin to lighten and you will see a noticeable improvement in skin tone.

After the treatment, you must avoid perfumed products, make up (excluding mineral make up), sauna’s, steam rooms and swimming for 2 days. You can wear mineral make-up immediately – available at your clinic – if you wish. You must avoid using products with acids, retinol and exfoliating beads for at least a week.

We recommend using Youngblood mineral cosmetics, and a psychical broad spectrum SPF such as Dermaquest Zinclear SPF to protect and prevent the further appearance of age spots. To enhance the results further we would recommend you use a product that will rebuild the skins collagen, such as DermaQuests 3D StemCell Complex.

Q: Is there any downtime?
A: Your skin may appear a little flushed after the treatment, but this should subside very quickly

A: Most people need a course of 3+ treatments with 4 weeks in between each session. Improvements will be seen after each session.

Q: What will the treatment feel like?
A: IPL treatments are pain free. A few clients say that the light flashes feel like a gentle warm flick to the skin.
