Dermaroller or eDermastamp (EDS) treatment is an established skin-needling procedure. It’s a way to rejuvenate your skin by kick-starting collagen production and creating a healthier look. Dermaroller was first developed to target and reduce scarring; however, as the treatment also increases collagen and elastin in the skin, it’s great for anti-ageing.

How does it work?PlusMinus

A small handheld roller or EDS head is manually applied to ageing or scarred skin. It’s gently rolled over the area to regenerate it. The treated skin responds by producing more natural collagen which your skin needs to stay firm and regenerate scar tissue. New skin cells are generated which enhance the overall structure. It takes up to about six weeks. Not only do you get the benefits of new collagen (plump, youthful skin), these treatments will also make your skin care products more effective. How? By making micro fine holes in your skin. It allows the active ingredients to penetrate your skin with ease.

By making micro fine holes in your skin, dermaroller allows the active ingredients in your skincare products to penetrate your skin more effectively. At DestinationSkin, we love combining skin-needling with DermaQuest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum.

The ‘bigger is better’ argument doesn’t stand with skin-needling. The devices we use, with their 1.5mm needles, achieve the same results that other rollers produce with longer, thicker needles. Don’t compromise on quality, safety or comfort. The needles we use are micro-fine to gently penetrate the uppermost layer of the skin.

We have recently started using a new electronic version of the dermaroller device. Its six needles are dropped into the skin at a rate of 80–150 times per second at a needle depth of 0.3mm to 1.5mm. The design provides a more comfortable treatment.

Will it work for my skin type?PlusMinus

Anyone concerned with acne scarring or ageing is suitable, providing there are no contraindications, such as pregnancy, photosensitive medication or uncontrolled diabetes. If you have acute acne, we wouldn’t advise treatment and would recommend an alternative to reduce the breakouts first, and then to progress to dermaroller or dermastamp to treat the remaining scarring/discolourations.

Why should I have this treatment?PlusMinus

Acne often leaves behind unsightly scars. By stimulating vital collagen, DermaRoller helps to regenerate the damaged skin to smooth scars and even out skin tone.

As we age our skin looses elasticity as collagen levels decline, leaving skin looking tired & lined. Skin needling is proven to reduce lines & wrinkles, by stimulating collagen production. Almost all of our clients report that their skin looks fuller & texture is improved.

DermaRoller can also treat stretchmarks – new collagen production visibly reduces the appearance of body stretchmarks by smoothing torn fibres in the skins deeper layers.

What areas of my body can be treated?PlusMinus

The most common area to have treatment is the face, including the neck area. However, this treatment can be performed on almost all body areas, including the stomach, chest and thighs.

What results can I expect?PlusMinus

The natural regeneration process takes up to six weeks but the results are well worth waiting for. The reason for this time is that the collagen is produced in the deeper layers of the skin, and the natural skins turnover process is needed for the new collagen enhanced skin to reach the surface.

Clients often notice the skin texture is improved around 1 week after treatment. For the treatment of scarring, multiple treatments are needed to increase the collagen whereby it restructures the skin.

Pre-treatment advicePlusMinus

Prior to the treatment, please advise the clinic of any recent sun exposure, or application of fake tan. Avoid using retinol, glycolic or salycylic acid products for 1 – 2 weeks prior to treatment.

How many treatments will I need?PlusMinus

For general anti-ageing up to 3 sessions are needed consecutively, followed by maintenance, of approximately 1 – 2 treatments per year. This is due to the natural process of the breakdown of collagen, by which the treatment will help the skin to continually produce new collagen.

For acne scarring, depending on the level of scarring, between 3 – 6 treatments are needed.

For stretchmarks, again depending on the severity of your marks, between 3 – 6 treatments are needed.

You must avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks after the treatment and use Heliocare SPF daily. We also advise you to use the Genuine Dermaroller Masks to rehydrate the skin as the skin cells are renewing. You should use this 1-2 times in the few days following on from your treatment. The skin can often feel dryer after treatment and we recommend that you use a B5 serum. Avoid sauna’s, steam rooms, swimming and the gym for up to 72 hours after treatment. Avoid using acid based products for up to 1 week after treatment. Mineral make up can be applied after 12 hours of having the treatment performed.

Q: How much downtime is there after treatments?
A: Your skin will look flushed after this treatment and may feel tighter than normal. This will start to subside after one to two hours, with slight redness over the following couple of days. It’s important that you wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ product. We recommend SkinCeuticals Mineral Radiance Defence SPF 50. This will protect your skin during post-treatment. To speed up recovery time, we also recommend using the SkinCeuticals Redness Neutraliser in conjunction with a moisture-quenching hydrating serum.

Q: Is dermaroller treatment safe?
A: We only use the genuine, German-engineered dermaroller medical devices. They each carry the CE mark.

Q: Does dermaroller treatment  hurt?
A: Our dermaroller treatment doesn’t hurt. – We use numbing cream with all our skin-needling treatments to make the procedure more comfortable. The new eDermastamp is particularly gentle.
