What are acne scars?

Acne scars is the umbrella term used to describe a range of post-acne inflammation and pigmentation marks left after an aggressive outbreak. There are many different kinds of acne scars, like rolling, ice pick and boxcar scars, that remain in the skin long after the outbreak has passed. Scars and dark blemishes are left on the skin as a result of dermal inflammation and epidermal damage which the skin begins to repair using collagen and other fibrous tissue. When the skin heals shallow, or deep cystic, acne scars, abnormal collagen production can cause the raised lesions or indentations visible on the skin’s surface. We combat this by using collagen-replacing treatments to resurface the skin and improve irregular texture, tone and blemishes, so you can achieve the beautifully soft, smooth and flawless skin of your dreams!

Our acne scarring treatments

For the biggest impacts on diminishing acne scars and blemishes, we offer the following treatments:

Microneedling – We use genuine DermaRoller® devices to encourage collagen production and this treatment is extremely effective in reducing the appearance of ice pick, boxcar and rolling acne scars. Microneedling works by using clinical-level collagen induction tools, called a DermaRoller® or eDermaStamp®, that gently roll over the skin with ultra-fine needles to cause slight cellular trauma to the epidermis and trigger collagen production. Depending on the skin concern, you can go over large areas with the DermaRoller® or for more localised areas, concentrate solely on diminishing deeply set scars with the eDermaStamp®. By using advanced cone-shaped needles, the microneedling we deliver is a lot less painful than other microneedling devices and minimises the risk of significant epidermal damage that the traditional, knife-shaped needles once induced.

Laser skin rejuvenation – Light-based therapies, like intense pulsed light and laser, to treat acne is considered one of the most minimally invasive and safe ways to significantly improve acne scarring – whilst targeting pigmentation and strengthening easily reddened skin. This treatment works by using multiple infrared laser wavelengths to penetrate deeply into the skin’s layers to artificially accelerate collagen levels in the dermis. Laser rejuvenation also has many visible benefits in improving your complexion, resurfacing the skin, elevating tissue quality and killing acne-causing bacteria to prevent future breakouts.

During your consultation, your practitioner will give you all the information surrounding each acne scarring treatment we offer and help you craft the ultimate treatment plan that suits you and will benefit your skin the most.

We also have some other complementing facial treatments that can be used alongside the above treatments to help enhance the final outcome and these are:

Chemical skin peels – On its own this treatment can target mild acne scars and works by exfoliating the skin using a blend of active ingredients, botanical extracts and natural enzymes to essentially give you a newer epidermis. The good thing about skin peels is that they are completely customisable and can be tailored to be stronger, or gentler, to match your scarring severity. When combined with either microneedling or laser resurfacing, it can dramatically enhance your final outcome by improving discoloration and superficial scars simultaneously.

Microdermabrasion – This is another exfoliating treatment most commonly used on the face. Microdermabrasion involves exfoliating the skin with micro-sized aluminium oxide crystals (sized between 0.06-0.45mm) to help resurface the epidermis. This treatment can also include the additional application of skincare products like retinol, salicylic or glycolic acids upon request. This treatment may cause hypo/hyperpigmentation complications on darker skin tones – or skin types that are prone to discolouration – so instead we recommend skin peels or HydraFacial as alternatives.

HydraFacial – A patented six-step facial that works to detox, cleanse, exfoliate, extract, brighten and stimulate the skin. We have many types of HydraFacial available that have been developed to target acne scarring specifically and we recommend the Acne Pro with LED Isolaz. This is an extremely exclusive treatment that is not usually delivered together, yet we are offering it to our clients as it has amazing benefits to intensely clean the skin whilst promoting skin cell renewal and repairing epidermal damage caused by burst pustules or cystic acne. We also offer Platinum HydraFacial that has advanced the steps of an original HydraFacial. These are Cleanse + Peel, to reveal a new layer of skin by gently exfoliating and resurfacing (and has the added benefit of a skin peel), Extract + Hydrate and Fuse + Protect. These steps work to flood the skin with antioxidants and glow-boosting serums that can help to shrink pores and shallow epidermal damage. You can also add the ZO Rozatrol® or Circadia® Protect Plus boosters to reduce redness, pigmentation and support the healthy functioning of the skin’s barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acne scars are often exacerbated when touched and picked at, or develop as a result of infected, aggressive spots that have burst. When a spot bursts it damages the hair follicles and then consequently, has a lastingly affect on the appearance of the surrounding skin in the process. Scars often appear in cystic and inflamed acne and can form into boxcar, rolling and ice pick acne scars.

Boxcar scars are round, oval depressions in the skin that can be deep, or shallow, box-like crevices that are often caused by burst spots and widespread, inflammatory acne.

Rolling scars are bands of scar tissue that form beneath the epidermis that give the skin it’s rolling, uneven and wave-like appearance.

Ice pick scars are the deepest, narrow scars that cause the skin to have a pitted texture. They are formed once the active spots of acne have passed and are the remaining signs of cysts and papules lesions that have significantly damaged the pores. They are developed when the skin produces a lack of collagen during skin repair and makes indentations rather than healing over completely.

During a consultation, your practitioner will examine your scarring and formally declare how many treatments are recommended to remove, or significantly improve, your complexion. For mild scars, less treatments are needed and for severe acne, a combination approach may be recommended to elevate your results.

To get an idea of the cost of acne treatments, single treatments of microdermabrasion are £69, skin peels start at £79, microneedling is £129 and skin rejuvenation at £169. HydraFacial single sessions are £75 and HydraFacial Platinum is £99, or a personalised Platinum HydraFacial is £139. We always recommend a course of treatments to get the best results and this is more cost-effective with 10% and 20% discounts available on some packages.
