• Waxing vs Laser Hair Removal

Your guide to two of the most popular methods of hair removal on the market!

There are two popular options for most individuals when it comes to hair removal: laser hair removal and waxing. Laser hair removal uses lasers to target and destroy the hair at the root, making it a highly effective method of hair reduction which usually only requires approximately 6-9 sessions. In contrast, waxing is a semi-permanent method of hair removal which requires repeat treatment every 3-4 weeks and uses wax applied to a strip to pull the hair from the root.

Below we discuss more about these two methods of hair removal; which gives the best results, which is more painful and which is cheaper!

Is laser hair removal permanent?PlusMinus

Whilst laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth and many clients report never experiencing growth again, we cannot guarantee that this is a completely permanent method, and depending on several individual factors there may be ongoing maintenance required.

Is waxing better than laser hair removal?PlusMinus

Waxing is a method of hair removal that requires regular treatments over a lifetime, whereas laser hair removal only requires a small number of treatments (normally between 6-9) to significantly reduce hair growth. Whilst an effective way of removing hair, waxing can lead to ingrown hairs, irritation/rashes on the skin, and can be uncomfortable if performed poorly. Depending on the area, waxing can also be a more time consuming treatment than laser hair removal, which can take as little as 15 minutes per area.

Is laser hair removal painful?PlusMinus

Laser hair removal is generally not a painful treatment and is often described as a mild tingling sensation, however this can vary from individual to individual, and depends on sensitivity to pain in general. During treatment, cold air is also blown on the area to reduce any discomfort.

Which is more painful - waxing or laser hair removal?PlusMinus

This is heavily dependent on the individual having treatment, however waxing is often reported as more painful, and can lead to further problems such as ingrown hairs and irritation after the treatment. Laser hair removal does not have these side effects.

Is laser hair removal cheaper than waxing?PlusMinus

In comparison to laser hair removal, waxing requires repeat treatment over a lifetime, and therefore works out not only significantly more time consuming, but also much more expensive. See the table below for an example of how much time AND money you can save with laser hair removal, compared to waxing.

Will waxing affect laser hair removal?PlusMinus

The simple answer is, yes waxing will negatively affect laser hair removal! By waxing between your laser hair removal treatments, you will remove the root of the hair, which means that we won’t be able to detect the hair with the laser and will therefore be unable to treat you.

How long after waxing can I have laser hair removal?PlusMinus

At least two weeks, once the hair has started to come back through and we can effectively target it with the laser.

How long does your hair have to be for laser hair removal? PlusMinus

We would advise letting your hair grow for at least 2 weeks, so that it is long enough for us to see its colour, texture etc and accurately test patch the area that you are having treated.

Are there side effects of laser hair removal? PlusMinus

No, there are no side effects of laser hair removal. Before we treat anyone, we do a test patch on each area that you are having treated to ensure that we have our machines at the right settings for your skin, and to ensure that you do not have any adverse reactions.

Are there side effects of waxing?PlusMinus

For some individuals waxing can cause ingrown hairs if not performed properly, which can become very painful and irritable. As well as this, waxing can give some people rashes and bumps where the hair has been pulled out.

What are the results of waxing/laser hair removal?PlusMinus

After approximately 6 sessions of laser hair removal, you can expect for there to be little to no further hair growth (further sessions and maintenance sessions may be required depending on hair and skin type as well as any hormonal conditions such as PCOS, that can cause excessive hair growth). Waxing can stunt hair growth for up to 4 weeks, however once this period has ended the hair will grow back again and require further treatment.
