By now, we’re all too familiar with the fear of webcam, but this Christmas it’s all about confidence. To ensure we’re ready for the party season, we’ve spoken to Selen Hurer, professional make-up artist and our very own Group Clinical Director, Dr Toni Phillips, to get their top tips on getting party season ready, Zoom style!
Preparation is key
Dr Toni reveals that before applying make-up it’s important that we focus on prepping our skin. The best way to do so is by using a three-step cleansing routine. This includes cleansing, exfoliating (especially if you have an oily T-zone) and moisturising.
It’s also important to use a SPF, one that acts like a hydrator so that your make-up looks good over the top of it. SPF is super important, even if indoors. UV rays still enter through windows and the emitted blue light from screens and devices can also age skin.
DestinationSkin have a great range of SPF products for all skin types, plus you get 20% off & Free Delivery on your first order.

Less is definitely more
While we’re normally used to pulling every palette out of the make-up drawer ahead of a party, when getting ready for the webcam, it’s a bit different. Professional make-up artist, Selen, says it’s best to go for minimal make up, keeping the skin light and fresh.
It’s important to focus on the T-zone section of our face as this is oilier, something that the webcam will pick up on. To avoid this, simply blot your forehead, nose, and chin with minimal make-up leaving the cheeks to give a little dewier look.
Dr Toni reveals that we can also control excess oil on the skin before applying make-up by using a cleanser with salicylic acid and some quality oil-control pads. These are soaked in salicylic acid and should be wiped over the face, mainly the t-zone immediately after cleansing.
Try the Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanser, formulated with both salicylic and lactic and mandelic acid, to decongest your pores and achieve an airbrushed look.
Complexion, complexion, complexion
Selen reveals that complexion is everything when it comes to that webcam glow and has shared her three must-haves for a simple but effective look.
- Use an illuminating or brightening primer to blur away imperfections and even out that skin tone
- For a bronzed look, go for a tinted moisturiser instead of a thick heavy foundation. This will give you a dewy look that works every time
- Go for a cream blush on the apples of the cheeks – this is a super easy way to get an instant lift
All that shimmer and sparkle
It’s no secret that we love a bit of glitter over the festive period, not just on the decorations but our faces as well! However, Selen reveals that loose glitter can be a bit of a hassle and we should opt for a creamy based eyeshadow with sparkly pigments instead. This can instantly lift the eyes and give us that Christmas glow we’re all after.
Aside from make-up, there are other ways to give us that glamour glow. When looking in our wardrobe, think about the colours that will complement our skin.
- Cool undertones: silvers, greys, magentas, emeralds and sapphires are your go-to
- Warm undertones: autumnal colours such as rich rusty browns and bronze colours will compliment your skin
- Neutral undertones: light peaches and dusty pinks will work amazingly with your skin tone
We all know the secret to a good selfie is lighting and this is no different when on webcam. Make sure the light is always in front of you, rather than above or behind, either of these angles can cast unflattering shadows on your face.
We know the hours are a lot shorter in the winter months, but try and use as much natural light as possible. This is the key to great complexion and can give your eyes that special shimmer.
If using artificial light, have a play around and move the light source further away from your face and let your webcam automatically adjust the balance. This will give the most natural lighting possible.
Post festivities care
We all know that January comes hand-in-hand with a kick start on exercise and healthy eating. Dr Toni reveals that it’s also very important to look after our skin once the festive indulgences are out the way, as this can lead to dehydration and inflammation of the skin.
Simple steps such as clean nutrition and getting back into a solid skincare routine, with a few more hours sleep, can help your skin’s revitalisation process.
