Why do we get wrinkles?

As people get older, their skin naturally becomes drier, thinner, less elastic and damage builds up, causing lines and wrinkles to become more apparent and form permanent grooves. The skin has always formed wrinkles, but with age it becomes less elastic and so less able to “bounce back”. Levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid – which help give your skin shape and firmness, acting like scaffolding – decrease with age too, leading to wrinkles forming around the forehead, eyes and smile lines. Wrinkles can either be static or dynamic and the key is to avoid getting static wrinkles by tackling them when they are still dynamic.

How can we prevent facial wrinkles?

Broken down or damaged collagen and elastin is a primary cause of sagging skin and wrinkles. While collagen and hyaluronic acid levels do naturally decrease as you get older, there are several environmental and lifestyle factors that can speed up that process. It’s not a lost cause though, as there are things you can do to take control here!

Protecting against UV and sun damage

The sun can damage your skin in a few ways. Not wearing SPF leaves you vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays which breaks down collagen and elastin. Suncream shouldn’t just be limited to days on the beach, either – ensure you’re wearing some kind of protection whenever you’re out and about, even if it doesn’t seem sunny! Many foundations and moisturisers incorporate SPF into its formula to give you all-round protection, but we would always advise you incorporate a proper SPF into your routine for proper protection And, of course, stay away from the cardinal sin for skin: sunbeds!

Here’s another element of sun protection you might not have thought of: Sunglasses stop you from squinting in bright sunlight, which is a mini skin savior! Squinting forces muscles to contract and the skin around your eyes to crease, which can cause wrinkles around the eyes. So, if you’re headed out into the sun, make sure to take your sunglasses.

Eating well

Excess sugar and alcohol intake can result in “advanced glycation end products” (AGEs), forming in your body. These are harmful to collagen and elastin, but there are some foods you can eat that’ll help restore this damage.

Protein-packed eats like chicken, fish and beans actually prevent wrinkles thanks to their boost of amino acids which help rebuild skin and collagen. And, of course, stay hydrated – the health benefits of water are truly immeasurable.

A good night’s sleep

One of the many drawbacks of lack of sleep means your skin can’t relax, preventing it from repairing and renewing while you slumber. This leads to less cell turnover, resulting in a dry, dull complexion.

And it’s not just how long you sleep that counts – it’s also your sleeping position which can affect the development of wrinkles. Sleeping on your stomach means your pillow shoves your skin left, right and center, forcing it to crease and etch wrinkles into your face. It also causes puffy eyes and prevents fluids from easily draining. To prevent this, sleep on your back and keep your head slightly elevated.

Improve your environment

Urban life is extremely damaging to your skin. Daily exposure to smog, smoke and fumes really takes a toll on your complexion as it weakens your skin’s barrier. Unhealthy air results in your skin going under ‘oxidative stress’, a major cause of premature ageing. Counteract this with fresh air and anti-pollution skin products such as those that contain Vitamins A, C and E. If you’re a smoker, then quitting will make a big difference to the quality of your skin, alongside many other life-enhancing benefits!
