Our (worst kept) Sun Care Secrets: How to keep your skin 100% protected this summer
Seeing the sun pop it’s head out is exciting, but before running to the nearest sun lounger make sure you’re fully protected from the damage it can cause.
Did you know that the skin is the body’s LARGEST organ!? Yep. That’s right. Yet so many of us take looking after it for granted, particularly when it comes to protecting it against the damage of the sun and harmful UV rays. Find out how you can best protect your skin in this weather and read on to find out just how important looking after your skin is.
The consequences of not using SPFs, or spending hours in the sun unprotected not topping up on your lotion can not only cause damage to your skin in the form of sun spots and uneven pigmentation, but it can also lead to devastating illnesses such as skin cancer, if not addressed early on. So for the sake of simply asking your BFF/hubs/mum to slap a bit of SPF on, throwing a hat on, or chilling in the shade for a couple of hours, it’s really not worth regretting it later when you’re severely sunburnt, experiencing heat stroke or worse.
Sun damage is also sometimes a very hard thing to physically see. Unless you’ve had your skin professionally examined under a UV skin scanner, seeing the effects of the sun and UV rays can be very difficult. This means that we are often blind to its effects, and we can continue damaging it until eventually we do irreversible damage.
As skin care professionals and ambassadors of healthy and safe skin care practices, we really don’t want you to be victim to the sun’s nasty side! So, as the British weather starts to heat up, we thought we’d share our very own sun care secrets for how to make sure your skin stays protected in the glorious weather, and how you can avoid potentially damaging conditions.
(not so) SECRET ONE: Invest in a good SPF (and slather that stuff everywhere!)
SPF lotions and sun creams help to protect your skin during sunny weather by increasing the amount of time that you can stay in the sun, without getting burnt. For example, a factor 30 SPF extends the amount of time that you can stay in the sun by 30 times. So, if you can normally stay in the sun for just 10 minutes before getting burnt, you could hypothetically stay in it for up to 5 hours with an SPF 30! We advise putting your SPF on around 15 minutes before heading out into the sun to make sure your skin’s soaked it all up and is fully protected!
Choose your level of SPF accordingly to your skin’s tolerance to the sun, if you have fair skin or are prone to burning, and if you have a history of skin cancer in your family, opt for something higher! Whilst all SPFs contain protection from UVB (ultraviolet B) rays it’s also particularly important to make sure your SPF has a high UVA (ultraviolet A) star rating. This indicates that the UVA protection is at least one third of the SPF value, and the higher the star rating, the better! We have a range of both face and body SPFs that you can view and shop here.
(not so) SECRET TWO: Get your skin UV assessed!
It might not be something you will have considered before, but it’s worth finding out if you have sun damaged skin, and how you can work to reverse the damage and prevent it in the future. We offer free UV skin assessments with every consultation or appointment, which are able to identify underlying skin conditions such as pigmentation, sun damage, dryness, dehydration, oiliness and others, that the naked eye wouldn’t be able to see. (not so) SECRET THREE: Stay hydrated
When the sun comes out we know where most people are headed: the beer garden! But as much as you might love a tipple in the sunshine, don’t forget to top up on the H2O too – it will save you from feeling faint in the soaring heat, and will probably help your head the following day if you’ve enjoyed one too many! For those of you that are tee-total, be aware that staying hydrated is still just as important to you too, and if you’re thinking of exercising outdoors or heading out on a 10 mile jog/bike ride remember to keep a bottle of water close, and stop if you are feeling faint. (not so) SECRET FOUR: Be aware of how long you’ve been lounging!
Whether you’re on a beach in the South Med or soaking up the rays in your back garden, it can be easy to forget how long you’ve been sat in the sun, especially if you’re prone to having a doze! Set a timer on your phone to make sure you’re getting a little shade at regular intervals, when you can also top that SPF up!
(not so) SECRET FIVE: SPFs not just for the summer!
Whilst it’s important to be wearing SPF when on holiday and in the sun, it’s equally as important to be wearing an SPF all year round, particularly on your face.
