This week, we’re saying hello to Dr Toni Phillips B.Sc (Melb), B.D.Sc, Clinical Consultant for DestinationSkin and former injectables specialist on Channel 4’s 10 Years Younger.

She’s sharing her beauty secrets, top tips and telling us all about just what went on behind the scenes on the show…

Let’s dive straight in – what lead you into aesthetics Dr Toni? You started out in dentistry originally, right?

Yes, I started out as a Cosmetic Dentist and began with using toxin for controlling masseter (jaw muscle) in terms of appearance and problems due to over function e.g. clenching and grinding. It was amazing to see the difference it could make, and inspired me to specialise in helping people with non-surgical injectable treatments. These days, I work with injectables, and a range of advanced skincare treatments including Dermaroller and OBAGI.

And what happens during a typical day in-clinic?

My days are busy and varied – usually, I’ll see a list of clients for anti-wrinkle injections, dermal filler and skin boosting treatments. As well as injectables, we’ll talk about skincare, and I may recommend a range of other treatments including IPL, peels and Dermaroller. It all depends on what the client wants to achieve, what’s realistic, and what will give best results.

What about outside of DS?

I’m often found in meetings , or training for Galderma – they’re the people who produce Restylane. I also lecture at conferences, so am often preparing talks and workshops during conference season – at the moment, I’m prepping for FACE, which is coming up in June.

I’m also on the Governance Group for the IHAS ‘Treatments You Can Trust’ scheme which means I will be attending meetings, contributing to articles for the Keogh Review and other regulatory activities. I will also take calls from Journalists who want quotes for some deadline they are working on.

Wow – you’re one busy lady, and well informed about what’s going on in the industry! Who better to ask which treatments are the ‘ones to watch’ – it’s always good to have a bit of insider knowledge, after all…

I think there’ll be a lot of interest in treatments that are less invasive. There are new products, such as skin boosters (Restylane Vital or Juvederm Hydrate) which are like fillers designed to hydrate and increase skin elasticity, and overall skin quality.

I think the biggest buzz for the future is radiofrequency. It has been around for years, but the technology is much improved and it really is excellent for collagen boosting and tightening.

Have you got any predictions for the industry for 5 and 10 years from now? What do you think beauty will look like?

I think beauty will still follow its trends in terms of makeup, hair etc. However, anti-ageing will look a lot more natural – now we know so much more about how to prevent problems with skin ageing.

I also think there’s a good chance that surgery will be obsolete in 10 years. It’s extreme, and hopefully in the future we’ll forgo the traditional options in favour of thread lifts and the emergence of other ‘lifting’ and ‘tightening’ technologies.

A little birdy tells us that the lovely people over at Clarisonic asked you to get involved in developing their rather fabulous facial brushes… tell us more?

I was an original member of the professional UK Advisory Panel from 2010. Now I help out on the National Advisory Board for Clarisonic/L’Oreal.

As far as the Clarisonic is concerned, it’s a great tool, and I was lucky enough to be the first UK practitioner to put it to use in a clinical professional environment. I also spent time writing the protocols for our therapists to use it before treatments including skin peels. Microdermabrasion, IPL and Dermaroller, all based on proven practice out of the USA.

We’ve heard lots of good things about Clarisonic on the blogosphere, and the girls over at XOJane LOVE it. Is it suitable for all skintypes, and does it work with normal cleansing products?

Yes, absolutely suitable and safe to use on all skin types. Even safe and effective for skin being treated for acne, rosacea and more complex problems like seborrhoeic dermatitis.

So what makes it **so** good?

The trick to it is the gentle sonic action. It’s not a rotary brush, so it isn’t too harsh, and the bristles are made from a fibre that doesn’t trap bacteria.

Cleanser-wise, it works with pretty much everything, apart from the granular ones. If you like a granular cleanser as part of your routine, we recommend to wash it off first, then do your Clarisonic minute.

You helped with the makeovers on 10 Year Younger – come on, ‘fess up and share some behind the scenes gossip!

The results are amazing, but it’s TV… and a lot of the people needed top ups of their toxins before the reveal, as it often took 4-6 months to get to that point. I’m afraid the gossip is mostly all good – most of the ‘clients’ were lovely and really grateful.

Now we’re going to be a bit cheeky, and ask you to let us on your beauty secrets. Do you have any treatments yourself?

Yes, a balanced program of toxin and fillers. Mainly I take great care of my skin and try to stay out of the sun – that’s my best anti-ageing advice.

And what’s your day-to-day skincare routine?

I have a daily cleanse (with salicylic acid cleanser as I’m oily) using Clarisonic. Then it’s a topical anti-oxidant and the big essential, sunscreen. Alternate evenings I use (or a retinol product) for an optimal collagen boost, and I have IPL 2- 3 times per year to even out my skin tone by clearing pigment and gain a little tightening.

Finally, what’s your beauty rule or motto to live by?

Beauty comes from within literally… so diet, exercise and mindful balance play a big role in looking your best.

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us Dr Toni – it’s been an education, and a lot of fun!
