Lip Fillers Work for Men too!

Here at Destination Skin, we are noticing that it’s not only women who want to enhance their lip shape. With celebrities like Tom Hardy and actor Ansel Elgort being seen with fuller lips, men are realising that they can opt for the procedure too.

We find that men have been opting for lip augmentation at an increasing rate. Some men have noticed their lips thinning as they age and some are simply dissatisfied with a thin or uneven lip shape.

Either way, lip filler could be the answer, as they add volume, definition and balance to your lips, with a natural-looking result.

If you’re intrigued by the idea that men can have lip fillers, too, then read on for more information.

Are You Noticing Thinner Lips?

Some people naturally have thin or uneven lips – the simple result of genetics – but also, as you age, your lips can become smaller and thinner. This is because as you get older, there are changes in the facial tissue, both in the layers of the skin and underneath. Your lips can shrink over time, losing volume and definition.

During the ageing process, you naturally lose collagen and fat, which is particularly noticeable in your lips. This causes both the face and lips to lose volume, definition and plumpness. Your lifestyle can also exacerbate the process; factors like not getting enough sleep, poor nutritional habits, too much time in the sun, and smoking can all speed up the signs of ageing.

Dermal fillers, like lip injections, fill out and plump up the areas that have lost volume and definition or can even create it if your lips are simply thin.

What are Lip Fillers?

Male lip fillers are a non-permanent treatment where hyaluronic acid is injected just beneath the skin’s surface by a doctor or nurse, who will then massage the area to ensure the filler is smooth.

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a clear, gooey substance naturally produced in your body. It’s a water-loving molecule whose function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist.

Because hyaluronic acid is a natural substance, our bodies begin to break it down after about 6 months, but the amount of time a filler lasts is different for everyone.

Don’t worry if you are dissatisfied or unhappy with the result you get from your lip fillers; there is always the option to have them dissolved. This is a simple process where an enzyme is injected into your lips that reacts with the hyaluronic acid to break it down. You can read all about having your lip fillers dissolved here.

What to Expect After the Treatment

Following the procedure, your lips will initially appear swollen, and you might notice some redness or a sensation of burning at the injection site. The lip filler swelling timeline goes something like this:

Over the first 2 days, your lips will likely be swollen. This is just a passing phase of the healing process. During the next 2 or 3 days, bruises will start to form. At this point, you might also notice small lumps on your lips. There’s no need to be concerned here; this will go away too.

After 7 days, the bruising and lumps will have disappeared, and after two weeks, all swelling should be gone. This is when you will finally see the results of your enhanced lips.

The healing process should last for about 2 weeks. If any of these symptoms persist after this, get in touch with us straight away.

We have a strong safety ethic here at DestinationSkin – safety is our standard.  If you have any questions, worries or concerns, we are always happy to discuss, reassure and advise you with what is best for you.

There are lots of things you can do yourself to both assist and speed up the healing process, after receiving lip fillers, in fact, we have a whole blog on it here.

But the basics are:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Avoid hot and steamy environments
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and smoking too, if you can
  • Apply an ice pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to soothe swelling
  • Take painkillers if you need to
  • Sleep with your head elevated

It’s highly recommended that you don’t fly for at least two weeks, too, as it can cause adverse reactions in some people.

Take these simple actions and you are likely to heal quickly and easily and see your new, natural, fuller, even lips even sooner.
