What is the best laser? How long do results last? Is it permanent? When should I have it? You asked. We answered. Here’s our Q&A guide to laser hair removal.
What is the best type of laser hair removal?
IPL v Laser v Home kits, there are so many options out there for skin laser hair removal! It can all get a bit confusing! Let us help clear things up…
IPL hair removal | Home kit hair removal | Laser hair removal |
IPL (intense pulsed light) machines are commonly used with many small businesses opting for these machines as they can be used for a multitude of things. IPL machines can be effective for the use of hair removal, however as this option isn’t directly heating the part of the skin that we wish it too, many more sessions are often needed. IPL also isn’t advised for the darker skin types due to them overheating the colour of the skin. | Home Kits which you can buy in department stores and pharmacy’s often use IPL technology, but at a much lower intensity meaning again more and more times of use are needed to start seeing results. These machines also have very small surface areas in which they cover, meaning that to treat your full legs could take hours upon hours. | Lasers have become the most popular due to their effectiveness and ability to treat all hair and skin types safely. Laser will give you the best results in the quickest time frame with the safest standards when performed correctly. |

I have Hidradenitis suppurativa which has caused me years of suffering with terribly painful infections under both arms. My dermatologist gave me two options; a year on antibiotics to manage the condition, or laser hair removal which would hopefully resolve the issue more permanently. I opted for the latter and I am so glad I did! I have not had a single infection since beginning the laser sessions, and the once thick and dark hair which covered a large area has now been reduced to a much smaller patch of lighter and finer hair that grows much more slowly; I only have shave once every three weeks. My underarms are generally smoother and lighter in appearance too. Laser hair removal has made a remarkable difference to my health and my overall wellbeing. I am genuinely so pleased with the results.

How long do laser hair removal results last? Is it permanent?
Laser hair removal requires a short term commitment to get long term results. Often clients see a difference after the first session, but in other instances the results won’t be instantaneous and you’ll start to notice the effects later. Once your course of treatments has been completed, you will not have to think about regular hair removal again. Results can last many months and many years, however maintenance is often recommended to keep any new hairs at bay. A maintenance session is usually carried out on average once per year however areas of the face may need more frequent sessions if there is any hormonal imbalances which can cause hair to grow. The hairs that have been removed during the course won’t grow, but new hairs are the ones you need to maintain. Other factors such as pregnancy, some illnesses and medication can cause regrowth which can be maintained.
How many laser hair removal treatments should I have?
Six treatments are recommended to get going and to get a significant amount of the hair banished. Treatment gaps are on average between 4-6 weeks so to get to the stage where you can ditch the razor could take up to 36 weeks.
When is best to have laser hair removal done?
Autumn and winter are the perfect times to start laser hair removal in time to be hair-free for the following summer! Start in October and you’ll be ready for the warmer weather in June.
Laser works best when your skin is at its natural lightest colour so having laser a couple of months after any sun exposure will get you the most effective results.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Laser hair removal is found by many to be more comfortable than other methods like waxing and threading, however, some areas can be slightly more uncomfortable. To ease any potential discomfort you may experience, we use a few different types of cooling methods such as cool air and cool chill tip on the lasers to cool your skin. Treatments are also very quick with the average treatment of an underarm being 1-2 minutes, so any discomfort won’t last long.
What are the side effects of laser hair removal?
You may experience some reddening of the skin around where the hair used to be, which could last from a few minutes to 24 or 48 hours. For two days after each treatment, avoid exposure to the sun and don’t use the gym, saunas, steam rooms or have any hot baths or showers. Also be aware of perfumed lotions and follow the aftercare the will be advised in your consultation. We also recommend that you don’t have any treatment whilst you have an active tan as this can lead to unwanted side effects. We are always safe within the treatments that we perform and will be able to advise you on the best time intervals after and before any sun exposure.
How does electrolysis work?
Electrolysis is a method of removing individual hairs from the face or body. Today’s medical electrolysis devices destroy the growth centre of the hair with a heat energy using a very fine probe (the size of a hair follicle) which is inserted into the hair, the hair is then removed with tweezers. As each hair is treated individually it is best for small areas of hair removal and not large areas such as legs. Electrolysis can be performed on hairs that may not respond to laser treatment such as white, grey and blonde hairs.
