Summer is fast approaching and with the sunnier weather everyone’s getting a little excited about showcasing their summer wardrobes, upcoming holidays, and soaking up the rays. Whilst this might sound lovely to the majority of us, summer can also be a time that becomes especially stressful for those that suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating to you and I). Instead of being able to walk out in your favourite dress or new white shirt, you find yourself covering up in baggy tops, or just avoiding the heat in general for fear of the dreaded sweat patches.
Unfortunately, the entirely natural and necessary process of sweating can in some people’s cases cause great anxiety and embarrassment when their level of sweating is uncontrollable. What is Hyperhidrosis?
Sweating is a natural process whereby when the body becomes hot, the brain signals to the sweat glands to produce fluid in order to cool our bodies down, and this is it’s way of regulating the temperature of our bodies so we don’t overheat (clever, eh?!)
We expect that during warmer weather, when doing an intense workout (yes, running up the office stairs counts), or dancing the night away with friends we will experience some level of sweating. However, if you’re sweating excessively even when not doing these things and find that it’s all year round, you might suffer from Hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes the body to sweat excessively despite the body not needing to, and commonly affects the underarms, palms of the hand and soles of the feet. Although primarily a physical condition, the symptoms of Hyperhidrosis can impact significantly on individual’s emotional and mental wellbeing.
What causes hyperhidrosis?
There are two types of hyperhidrosis: primary and secondary. Whilst it’s not entirely clear what causes primary hyperhidrosis, in many cases it is a result of an overactive nervous system which calls for more perspiration, despite the body not requiring it. In the case of secondary hyperhidrosis, this can be caused by pregnancy, the menopause, anxiety, certain medications and some infections. In many circumstances the condition can be made worse by anxiety or excitement, although these do not directly cause it.
How can I prevent my excessive sweating?
We understand how frustrating it must be to constantly plan your life around which types of clothes you can and can’t wear, and the exasperation when the latest ‘specially formulated’ deodorant you’ve just bought just doesn’t work (for the one hundredth time).
Fortunately for you, we’ve got a long term solution in the form of Botox® injections. By administering Botox® into the affected area, signals sent to the sweat glands which are over producing sweat are blocked, which consequently reduces the excess amount being produced.
The role of Botox® is to block the release of acetylcholine temporarily. This is a chemical substance released by our nerve endings that sends signals to our glands to enable them to sweat. Therefore by blocking acetylcholine, the signals sent to the sweat glands are stopped, and ta-da… no more sweating!
What can I expect my treatment plan to look like?
In order to assess your suitability for the treatment and discuss your concerns further, you will begin your treatment journey with a consultation with one of our Medical Injectors. From here (providing you are medically suitable to go ahead) the treatment is administered by injecting Botox® directly into the areas responsible for sweat production. We use an ultra-fine needle which is virtually painless, so you won’t need anaesthetic.
Whilst results have been reported to last up to 12 months, the Botox® only temporarily reduces the overactive sweat glands, therefore further treatment will be needed. A follow up appointment can be arranged to check the results between 2 – 4 weeks after the initial treatment. The onset of the effects of Botox® takes around seven to 14 days and as mentioned above can last up to 12 months, depending on the individual.
