How to keep unwanted hair at bay during the menopause
Menopause is a natural, and inevitable change women undergo as they get older. As hormone levels fluctuate and oestrogen levels decline, menopause occurs and women can no longer get pregnant naturally. Periods will also gradually – sometimes even suddenly – stop altogether.
There are many symptoms women experience during menopause, from more familiar ones like hot flushes, night sweats and hair loss, to lesser-known symptoms such as vaginal dryness, low mood and hormone-related weight gain.
Another symptom of menopause can also be the growth of unwanted facial hair. Due to the imbalance of oestrogen and testosterone, menopausal women can experience an increase of hair growth on their face which didn’t exist pre-menopause.
Why does menopause cause facial hair?
Increased facial hair growth occurs during the menopause because of the changing oestrogen and testosterone levels. As the production of oestrogen diminishes, it causes an imbalance, where testosterone (the male hormone) becomes more present and dominating within your hair follicles.
This stronger presence of testosterone and imbalance to your hormone levels, causes the increased production of facial hair growth.
Menopause facial hair removal
An increased amount of facial hair is not medically harmful, yet it can harm our self-esteem and conflicts with our perception of femininity. Just like body hair, facial hair can too be removed. Future growth can be managed with a range of at-home treatments and products, whether by using hair removal creams, plucking, waxing, threading or bleaching.
With these kinds of treatments, permanent hair removal is never guaranteed and regular maintenance is required to keep any unwanted dark hair and peach fuzz at bay. Removal creams and bleaching products can also be harsh, dehydrating and irritating to the face. Some hair removal products may even disturb the skin’s natural pH levels, causing breakouts, flakiness and rashes.
Where waxing, plucking and threading may seem like the most convenient options available – especially for instant results, the problem with manual removal is that it can be painful. These methods can also cause ingrown hairs when done incorrectly and often encourages rather than stunt or slow hair growth.
Best way to remove facial hair after menopause
Laser hair removal, however, is an option for long-term, permanent hair removal. Unlike at-home methods, like plucking hair and depilatory creams, laser hair removal ensures significant, if not complete, reduction of unwanted, menopause-induced facial hair. It is also safe to use on darker skin, as well as the delicate areas of the face like the upper lip, jaw and eye region.
It is by far the most effective option to remove facial hair after menopause, as it works to destroy the hair follicles in their most active stage of hair growth and stops the regrowth of future hairs.
Laser hair removal uses a small hand-held device that emits fine light beams to target the root of hair. This process also removes the potential for thicker regrowth (which is often the case with semi-permanent methods like plucking and waxing).
A typical course requires multiple sessions where results can be seen after each one. Once your course is finished you can see dramatic, significant results – whether in a complete removal of unwanted facial hair or a great reduction.
Key points to remember
- The increased growth of facial hair during menopause is very normal and is easily treated
- Laser hair removal is the most effective facial hair removal for permanent, long-lasting results
- Manual removal like waxing, plucking and threading are only temporary solutions with hair growing back denser than before
- Laser hair removal is an extremely safe and versatile enough to treat all skin tones and hair types
- Each session is around 10-15 minutes long and is far less painful than waxing, plucking and threading
With all the other symptoms of menopause to worry about, facial hair shouldn’t be one of them!
