Don’t Frown Over Smile Lines

Here at Destination Skin, we’ve seen a growing trend of using dermal fillers to soften smile lines.

Whether you call them smile lines, laughter lines, laugh lines or just wrinkles, dermal fillers are a simple and effective way to restore your face to a natural, rejuvenated look.

In this blog, we’ll look at what causes smile lines in the first place and how dermal fillers can help remove or reduce them, with subtle natural results. Read on to find out more.

How Do We Get Smile Lines?

Smile, or laughter lines, are caused mainly by the repetitive movements you make with your facial muscles when you smile or laugh.

When you are young, your skin is very elastic and ‘snaps back’ into shape as you change your expression. But the continuous movement of these facial muscles causes the tissue beneath to thin and wrinkles to appear and stay there even when you’re not smiling. These wrinkles increase over time as your skin loses collagen and elastin. The subcutaneous fat under your skin diminishes too, which gives a loss of plumpness and volume in your face.

The main lines caused by smiling and laughing are called nasolabial folds. These are the lines that form alongside your inner cheeks, stretching from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Everyone will have these lines, to some degree, but they do increase as you age.

The smile lines around the mouth, especially nasolabial folds, begin to appear around the age of 23 to 25 and become more noticeable as time goes on.

Crows’ feet wrinkles around your eyes can also be caused by smiling, as can small lines at the top of your nose, sometimes called ‘bunny’ lines.

Other lifestyle factors significantly affect how soon smile lines appear and how elastic your skin is.

About 90% of visual ageing is caused by the UV light from the sun or sunbeds. You can fend off signs of ageing by always wearing sunscreen.

Smoking is another big factor in premature skin ageing as it reduces the blood flow to the skin, stopping oxygen and other vital nutrients from reaching it. This means that smokers have less collagen and elastin in their skin and deeper wrinkles. The facial movements associated with smoking also cause lines to form, especially around your eyes and mouth.

Eating too much refined or added sugar also is associated with increased skin ageing. Known sometimes as ‘sugar sag’, the skin’s suppleness is affected due to a process called glycation.

Proteins, like collagen in your skin, bind with sugar molecules which reduces the ability of the collagen to function correctly.

Pollution, lack of sleep and stress can all contribute to premature skin ageing too.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work on Smile Lines?

While smile lines are inevitable as you age, if you decide that you want to reduce or remove your laughter lines, dermal fillers might be a good answer for you.

Dermal fillers can be used to reduce or remove nasolabial folds, smokers lines around the mouth, crows feet around the eyes and ‘bunny lines’ – the fine lines that appear from scrunching up your nose.

Fillers are usually made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural, water-loving molecule that occurs in our skin, maintaining plumpness and hydration.

We use Juvéderm® hyaluronic acid fillers here at Destination Skin, the world’s #1 brand. Their product matches the HA produced in your body and easily integrated by your facial tissue.

During the treatment, an anaesthetic cream is applied to your face to numb it, and then the HA is injected just beneath the skin’s surface, along the creases and lines of your face to fill them in. The line-plumping results are seen almost immediately.

Dermal fillers are non-permanent, as your body breaks down the HA over time, usually lasting 9 to 18 months, depending on how your own body reacts.

As with any other cosmetic treatment, there are always risks associated with the process, and there may be some side effects.

Dermal fillers are given by injection and must be carried out by experienced professionals in a clinical setting. Here at Destination Skin, we always have your well being and safety at heart. Do contact us if you have any questions, queries or concerns, and we will be happy to assist you.
