Although it doesn’t feel like we’ve had a long enough summer, Autumn is fast approaching which means we have to move forward and think about our skincare routine for the new season. With every seasonal change, our skin changes with the weather it produces, and it is often affected by the different climate conditions. For instance, in summer our skin needs to be protected more with SPF and frequently hydrated to replenish any moisture lost during warmer days. As we sweat more during the summer months, you may be prone to outbreaks of spots, Acne and eczema. Even Milia can occur due to the excess levels of oil being released, so to avoid any unwanted flare ups, you should exfoliate regularly and cut out any products with a high oil content from your skincare regime.

Now Autumn is here, the most important thing we can do for our skin is start to prepare it for facing the colder months. In Autumn, due to fluctuating weather conditions, it’s very common for your skin to feel drier, duller and more sensitive than usual, and after having a tan and summery glow you may notice it even more.

So our first tip for looking after your skin this Autumn is: invest in a good quality moisturiser. We know this may be a given, but having hydrated and happy skin is always worth it. During the Autumn months, it’s especially worth it as you have to protect your skin’s barrier against a lot of extreme opposites and aggressors, as daily your skin is faced with one temperature extreme to another, like cold wind one minute, to a warm room with the heating wacked on high the next. Your skin has to be strong enough to cope with any fluctuating temperatures and avoid looking and feeling overly dehydrated. We recommend using Dermaquest Essential Moisturiser or Obagi Hydrate for retaining long lasting moisture.

Dullness, is also a common problem experienced during Autumn and looking pale and feeling washed out is nothing new. We all miss sunny days during the colder seasons and after the summer months we are all lacking essential Vitamin D, but by adding Vitamin C into your skincare regime it can help brighten the skin and balance out any uneven pigmentation and sun damage caused in the previous months. Our SkinCeuticals Serum is packed with antioxidants and Vitamin C to help brighten, reduce wrinkles and restore vitality to your skin, however most Vitamin C serums will work in a similar way that helps hydrate and brighten your skin. Also, if you miss you summer tan, try Dermaquest Sheerzinc SPF30, a 2 in 1 SPF lotion and tinted moisturiser that not only protects, but gives you a gradual, natural looking tan too!

Our next Autumn tip is: don’t neglect your eyes and lips. Harsh winds effortlessly dry out our lips and eyes, so this Autumn don’t forget to give these areas some extra care. For sparkly eyes, maybe invest in a brightening eye drop during the colder months or a caffeine based eye cream to give your eyes some added pop. To keep your lips hydrated, lip balm is essential and should be applied frequently. Lip scrubs are also an easy addition to make to most skincare routines and can help to exfoliate the lips, remove any dead skin cell build up and reduce them getting chapped and sore. Try using a lip scrub that contains Hyaluronic Acid to which boost Collagen production and naturally plump the lips too! The eyes and lips are essential tools of communication, so look after them!

Our last skincare tip is (drumroll please): the night matters, so make the most of it. Nightly routines are a relaxing and healthy way to treat your skin after a long Autumnal day and should be just as important as your morning one! Start introducing nightly facials or masks regularly into your evening regime to help replenish and rejuvenate your skin. Facials and masks deeply hydrate your skin and by using ones that contain Collagen and Elastin, they work to protect your skins barrier and improve firmness, smooth any fine lines and stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, helping your skin heal from any environmental damage (like pollution/harsh weather) caused that day. If you feel like giving your skin a real treat and intense care, we have many treatments available, have a look here to see which one takes your fancy.

This Autumn is all about keeping our skin strong, healthy and bright – whilst also trying to maintain what we have left of our subtle summer tan, so tinted moisturisers are a must!
