Sun damage

DestinationSkin’s Group Clinical Director, Dr Toni Philips, gives the g-lowdown on keeping your skin sun-safe

It might feel like summer is still miles away with the lousy weather, but as the sun starts to shine it’s important to remember to stay safe and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. So, whether you’re heading to the park to picnic with friends, BBQing in your garden or soaking up the sun on the beach, Dr Toni Philips, Group Clinical Director at DestinationSkin reveals how best to look after your skin this summer:

“We often think about avoiding the damaging effect of the sun in terms of visible skin issues such as pigmentation, premature ageing and wrinkles – all important to bear in mind if you want healthy, smooth and glowing skin.

However, we can’t forget that UV rays, especially UVB rays, can be very dangerous and have much more severe consequences. UVB rays cause short-wave radiation which can penetrate the superficial layers of the skin. This high intensity damage to the cell DNA which can lead to skin cancer.”

Dr Toni’s top tips to protect your skin this summer

First signs of damage: The key sign of UVB is sunburn, and it doesn’t have to be severe. The faintest pink colour seen after sun exposure indicates that UVB has been absorbed and caused trauma to the skin.

SPF is your skin’s saviour: You may be tempted by a low SPF sunscreen to ‘top up the tan’ but you need at least SPF 30+, though SPF50, such as Heliocare Advanced XF Gel SPF50, is ideal. What is most important is to make sure you are checking the sunscreen formulation to see how long it is meant to last and how often it suggests reapplying.

It’s not just UV rays to watch out for: Blue light emitted from the screens of our devices such as smart phones, has longer wavelengths and penetrates the skin deeper than UVA and UVB rays. Whilst this might not be as harmful it can damage collagen and elastin which support the skin. Enough, repeated exposure to blue light can also cause hyperpigmentation – an overproduction of brown pigments in the skin.

I’d always suggest using a sunscreen, such as Heliocare’s 360 Water Gel SPF50+, that not only covers UVA, UVB but also visible light and near infra-red filters for that extra protection.

Keep protected all day long: You may think that it’s just the hot summer days you need to worry about and if it doesn’t feel hot then you’re fine. However, UVA rays from the sun are present all year round and penetrate deep into the dermis causing sun damage associated with skin ageing. Click here to read our full blog on how to reverse and repair sun damage.

Keep your skin clear: The hot summer days provide the perfect environment for bacteria or yeast to overgrow on our skin, causing red acne spots, clogged pores and a build-up of oils in your glands due to the combination of sweat, heat, sun cream and pollution. Make sure to cleanse your skin regularly to help avoid this, especially if you’re exercising in the heat. Using the right cleanser for your skin type will remove excess oil, gently exfoliate dead skin cells and debris, whilst leaving the skin barrier intact. If you are experiencing acne, we have a range of treatments to help that you can view here.

Your sunscreen can help too: Try and make sure your SPF is non-comedogenic (does not block pores), like Heliocare’s oil-free dry touch gel SPF50, before you use it on your face as well as body, and you should never use SPF that’s out of date, as it will be ineffective and not protect you from sun damage.

Reapply and cover up: It is recommended you apply 1oz of SPF over your skin at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure – and remember to top up every 2-3 hours, especially if you’re likely to be in the water.

Don’t overdo it: I’d always advise to avoid direct sun exposure and spend time in the shade during the hottest parts of the day, between 11am and 3pm.

As well as SPF, the best protection is light clothing and a wide-brimmed hat for the face and scalp too. Take all of this into account and you can enjoy and make the most of the sun!

SKIN TREATMENTS

Profhilo®, the newest sought after treatment to take the aesthetics industry by storm, is receiving rave reviews from medical professionals and clients alike, and we’re not surprised why! Supplying the skin with a unique level of hydration, this treatment works to enhance the plumpness and firmness of your skin from within; evening out fine lines and wrinkles and other signs of ageing to allow your skin to achieve a new lease of life! Carry on reading to find out more about exactly how Profhilo® works, its key benefits and the results you can expect.

What exactly is Profhilo®?

Profhilo® is a revolutionary skin remodelling treatment that rejuvenates sagging, dull and ageing skin. From around the age of 25 we begin to produce less collagen and over the years our skin starts to show signs of ageing in the form of fine lines, hollowness, lack of volume etc. By injecting 100% Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in various points across the face, Profhilo® is able to vastly increase hydration and firmness within the skin, resulting in the visible improvement of fine lines and wrinkles as well as overall facial volume. Unlike dermal fillers, Profhilo® does not work to improve the appearance of one area in particular (e.g. cheeks, lips, jaw line), but provides overall facial rejuvenation to create an all-round healthy, glowing and more youthful appearance that will help you feel more you!

Click here to read more on the difference between Profhilo® and Dermal Fillers.

So how does Profhilo® work?

Profhilo® works by administering Hyaluronic Acid (HA) (a substance found naturally within our bodies) in a number of points just beneath the skin’s surface, to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen. Due to the unique levels of HA administered, it is able to restore lost volume, tighten and firm skin, and give an overall renewed look that cannot be achieved with less advanced treatments such as peels. As mentioned above, although Profhilo® uses the same substance as dermal fillers, due to its formulation and the way it is administered, it achieves results across the entire face rather than in one particular area, in order to achieve a more consistent look.

The procedure of Profhilo® and side effects:

Profhilo® is injected into several points across the face to ensure the HA filler is evenly and accurately dispersed, and the process takes around 15 minutes in total. Much like other injectable treatments, there can be some discomfort experienced as the substance is injected. After the treatment, you may notice some mild swelling and bruising around the injection sites for the first 24 hours after treatment, however other than this we do not expect any adverse reactions to occur from Profhilo®.

Click here to read everything you need to know about Profhilo®.

How long does it last and what are the benefits?

You can start to see the results of Profhilo® at around 4 weeks after treatment and these can last up to 6 months, however this varies on an individual basis and can be longer or shorter than this. You will notice an overall more rejuvenated look across your face, with fine lines and wrinkles evened out so they are no longer as noticeable, and a much more plump complexion. For the very best results, we recommend a total of 3 treatments, every 4 weeks.

Everything you need to know about Injectable Treatments

INJECTABLE TREATMENTS
SKIN TREATMENT

Injectable treatments have progressively become a convenient alternative to more traditional cosmetic surgical procedures, especially for those seeking the perfect anti-ageing solution. The ability to restore a youthful complexion or revitalise ageing skin using relatively non-invasive treatments with little downtime is appealing to many.

Here we will cover many of your burning injectables questions including the different types, indications, regulations, as well as some of the benefits.

Types of injectable treatments and how they work

Injectable treatments for facial lines and wrinkles

Facial lines and wrinkles form following natural, age-related volume loss in the dermis along with repetitive contraction and relaxation of muscles in the face. Anti-wrinkle injections can help reduce the extent of facial wrinkles by either replacing the lost volume or by inhibiting the contraction of overactive facial muscles.

  • Dermal fillers are an ideal solution to replacing the lost volume, moisture and elasticity in ageing skin. Hyaluronic acid, the main component of dermal filler, is a naturally occurring resident of the skin that binds tightly to water molecules to keep the skin hydrated, plump and looking vibrant.
  • Anti-wrinkle injections that temporarily relax facial muscles are used to eradicate fine lines and reduce deep-set wrinkles in many problem areas of the face including laughter lines, forehead lines, crows-feet and bunny lines.

Lip fillers

Dermal fillers can also be used to alter and enhance the shape and fullness of the lips. Whether you are looking to make subtle enhancements to thinning lips and smoothen lip lines or make more significant adjustments to the contours of the lips, the DestinationSkin experts are on hand to tailor your lip filler treatments to compliment your desires. You can read more about the range of popular shapes and styles that are achievable with lip fillers in our dedicated blog here.

Profhilo®

A revolutionary preparation containing high concentrations of the injectable moisturiser, hyaluronic acid, that is used to achieve a full facial rejuvenation. Profhilo® contains only the purest form of hyaluronic acid without any unwanted chemicals. The preparation is injected into 5 specific areas on each side of the face around the jaw, nose, ears and chin followed by gentle soothing massage motions to achieve remodelling of the facial contours.

Which areas can I get injectables?

Anti-ageing injectable treatments are remarkably versatile and can be used to combat a range of concerns. Some commonly treated areas include:

  • Forehead
  • Glabella
  • Crow’s feet
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lip lines
  • Bunny lines

Who can get injectable treatments?

The adaptability of injectable treatments mean that they are suitable for a wide range of people to achieve a variety of results.

There are however some important age-related restrictions. Recent changes made to legislation in England now make it illegal to administer any cosmetic filler treatments to anybody under the age of 18. This legislation applies to any treatment intended to alter the appearance of the recipient but does not affect any treatment required for a medical need that is performed under the direction of a doctor.

Whether you are looking to reduce the visible signs of ageing, prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, or alter the contours of your lips, our qualified experts here at DestinationSkin are on hand to help you in deciding on the most appropriate injectable treatment for you.

What is Profhilo®?

Profhilo® is one of the newest ground-breaking treatments in aesthetics and is a treatment that has been specially formulated to help deeply hydrate your skin, reduce signs of ageing whilst creating a naturally youthful glow.

Our Group Medical Director and aesthetics treatment expert, Dr Toni Phillips describes it as the “holy grail”. She adds: “In my 15 year career it’s one of the most exciting things I’ve ever seen because it really changes the skin, it’s scientifically proven, we have a high rate of client satisfaction, I love having the treatment, I love giving the treatment and I love the way clients react when they see the results.”

Where can Profhilo® be used?

Profhilo® is a revolutionary skin remodelling treatment made from Hyaluronic Acid that rejuvenates sagging, dull and ageing skin. Unlike dermal fillers that are used to give definition to places like your lips, cheeks or jawline, Profhilo® provides an overall facial rejuvenation working to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Click here to read more on the difference between the two treatments.

Profhilo® is most commonly used in the face as you can see below:

Profhilo before and afterprofhilo before and after

But did you know that Profhilo® is also an effective treatment for areas other than your face? As Profhilo® hydrates skin, creating firmness and reducing fine lines, it can be used to reduce signs of ageing such as sagging and crepe-like skin on your neck, décolleté, arms, knees and hands.

See the difference it made to a client’s arms here:

Profhilo before and after

Is Profhilo® permanent?

Profhilo® is not a permanent solution as it has been designed to work with your body’s natural processes. It is formulated from Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a substance that already exists in your body to maintain moisture in your skin by encouraging the production of collagen and elastin. As such, the injected Profhilo® slowly breaks down over time. You can expect the results of your Profhilo® treatment to last for up to six months, but this differs from person to person. Dr Toni recommends having regular treatments per year to keep the collagen levels high and your skin looking fantastic.

“Profhilo® only stays in the skin for about 45/60 days and then it clears out of the body. In the meantime it has activated the stem cells which are now producing all of this new collagen and your skin just changes. What clients see initially when they have Profhilo is a glow due to the Hyaluronic Acid, that’s why we recommend having it on a regular basis because the high levels of Hyaluronic Acid keep the skin glowing. If some clients choose to only have it a few times a year, due to budget or availability, they’ll still get that biological stimulation from the new collagen but because the Hyaluronic Acid is gone they won’t get that glow benefit.”

SKIN TREATMENT

Profhilo® has taken the beauty world by storm. This wonder treatment plumps and rejuvenates tired, dull and ageing skin giving you a luminous glow and completely natural looking results. Profhilo® (the first of its kind) is essentially a hyaluronic acid (HA) moisturiser, which when injected has the benefit of working from within giving you long lasting results and younger looking skin. This is the ideal treatment for those over the age of 30, as this is when we start to lose a significant amount of collagen, elastin and HA.

“One of the gold standout treatments for me is Profhilo, it’s the holy grail! In my 15 year career it’s one of the most exciting things I’ve ever seen because it really changes the skin, it’s scientifically proven, we have a high rate of client satisfaction, I love having the treatment, I love giving the treatment and I love the way clients react when they see the results.” Dr Toni Philips, Group Medical Director at DestinationSkin

‘The holy grail of skincare’

Loved by beauty bloggers and journalists, Profhilo® was dubbed the ‘holy grail of skincare’ by Imogen Edwards-Jones of getthegloss.com. “It’s better than looking well rested. The result is a dewy, healthy, slightly plumper looking glow that takes a good five years off your face”. Amber Graafland, from the Daily Mirror is also a fan. “It’s the ultimate skin pick-me-up and perfect for anyone looking for skin that looks dewy, plumper and generally younger. Martine McCutcheon is fan and it’s the treatment beauty industry insiders can’t stop talking about”. So how does it actually work? And what ingredients can really make you look five years younger? Read on to find out the anti-ageing secret behind Profhilo®.

So, how does Profhilo® work?

Unlike other injectable treatments, Profhilo® is a moisturiser. It contains 100% synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA) and the ingredients can work from deep within the skin to rehydrate and plump. This is what makes it far more effective than any topical moisturiser that contains HA. With one of the highest concentrations of HA currently available, it not only boosts and hydrates, but can dramatically reduce fine lines and remodel sagging and ageing skin. It’s relatively painless and the treatment involves two sessions a month apart. Read more here about the treatment.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that is responsible for maintaining moisture within our skin and many skincare products contain this active ingredient. Profhilo® has been specially formulated to contain a unique level of synthetic HA which helps to encourage the production of collagen and elastin in the skin and when injected, it stimulates the skin’s natural synthesis of collagen.

How long does Profhilo® last?

Profhilo® lasts in the skin for around 28 days. During this time the stimulation of four different types of collagen and elastin takes place by slowly releasing hyaluronic acid. Within the first few weeks you will see intense hydration, glowing skin and fine lines can disappear! You skin will feel smoother and tighter.

What areas can be treated?

Profhilo® is most commonly used for facial areas including the top of the cheeks, nasolabial fold laughter lines, mouth and chin but can also effectively be used for rejuvenating the neck, décolletage, arms, knees and hands.

How is Profhilo® different to dermal filler?

If you are looking to add volume to specific areas, dermal filler would be the right treatment for you. Profhilo® is not a volumising treatment like dermal filler and isn’t used to enhanced specific areas of the face (e.g. lips and chin). The HA injected is dispersed evenly throughout the face giving you an all-round plumped, firmer appearance.

Profhilo® can be combined with this treatment to achieve maximum results. Talk to your practitioner in your free consultation about the best course of treatment for you.

Why You Should Only Get Fillers at a Specialist Clinic

Professional Clinic vs Discount Botch

Although filler treatments have become a more popular and easily accessible aesthetic procedure, the administration of filler remains an expert procedure that should only ever be performed by appropriately trained, qualified practitioners with relevant knowledge and experience, like those here at DestinationSkin.

Here we’ll tap into some of the main reasons why it is so important to visit a specialist clinic for any procedure involving fillers and injectables.

Book your free consultation now

Do you have to be qualified to administer filler?

Many clients expect that procedures such as Dermal Filler and Anti-ageing Injectables are subject to strict regulation and legal restrictions in the UK, however this is unfortunately not the case. The reality is that anybody is permitted by law to administer such medical treatments, and without professional regulation there is no obligation to take responsibility for any potentially life changing complications.

The advantages of visiting a professional clinic such as DestinationSkin for your cosmetic procedure fall under four main areas:

  • Appropriate training and qualification of practitioners mean that you can be rest assured that the treatment is being administered properly and safely.
  • Professional clinics that are regulated by the Care Quality Commission are subject to review of their safety and hygiene standards. This minimises the risk of infection and complications.
  • Professional clinics use high quality, properly licensed products whereas discounted, unqualified services often cut costs by purchasing cheaper, unlicensed alternative products that pose significant safety concerns.
  • Clinical professionals that are affiliated with a regulatory body such as the GMC or NMC are held accountable for the procedures that they perform.

Now we’ll look at some of the things that can go wrong when clinical expertise and safety are disregarded when selecting a clinic.

Dodgy filler – The Bad, The Ugly and The Downright Dangerous

The complications associated with dermal filler are related to problems that can be put into 6 main categories:

  • Volume – too much or too little filler is used for the treated area
  • Location – filler is administered in the wrong area
  • Depth – the needle is inserted too superficially or deep into the skin
  • Product – inappropriate or unlicenced products are used
  • Infection – substandard hygiene procedures lead to infection
  • Immune – the patient experiences an allergic reaction to the product

The Bad – Lumps and bumps

A common complication that occurs when dermal filler is administered improperly is the appearance of lumps or bumps under the skin. Often these appear because the injector has placed too much pressure on the syringe and administered too much filler in one area.

The Ugly – Tyndall effect

This complication arises in cases where hyaluronic acid filler is injected too superficially into the dermis or epidermis causing a blue tinge to the overlying skin.

The Downright Dangerous – Vascular complications

A very serious and dangerous complication of filler use is vascular occlusion. This can occur when the filler product is injected into either an artery or vein, leading to restriction of blood flow. If this complication is not treated as an emergency by a professional with the necessary skills and equipment, the consequences can be severe. These include severe pain, tissue swelling and necrosis and even irreversible blindness.

Regulation, regulation, regulation

Despite recommendations made by the NHS Medical Director in 2013 for all practitioners performing cosmetic procedures to be properly qualified, this is still not a requirement in the UK.

Currently, the only reliable way of ensuring that your aesthetic treatment is administered by an appropriately trained professional is to visit a clinic where procedures are performed by regulated clinicians. These include registered and licensed doctors, dentists, or nurses.

How Can Fillers Treat Fine Lines And Wrinkles?

Reading Time

INJECTABLE TREATMENTS
SKIN TREATMENT

Dermal fillers are most commonly associated with plumping and volumising effects in the lips and cheeks, but they are also great for treating wrinkles. They are a non-invasive and non-permanent approach to lessen laughter lines, deep or fine forehead lines, or lines around the mouth and nose, resulting in subtle, natural effects.

Read on to learn more about how dermal fillers repair wrinkles and creases, as well as which ones they work best for.

Fine Lines Or Wrinkles, What’s The Difference?

Fine lines are the result of a weakness in the skin’s foundation. They begin to form when the skin becomes folded and unable to return to its normal shape.

They are little skin creases that usually occur directly on or adjacent to the area of facial movement, but they can develop anywhere on the face. For instance, you might see a fine line on your cheeks that has grown crepey due to age and sun exposure.

A wrinkle isn’t that dissimilar. The depth of the crease in the skin is the primary distinction between fine lines and wrinkles. Fine lines are relatively light, whereas wrinkles are more pronounced. Wrinkles are sometimes referred to as expression lines.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance produced naturally by your skin to maintain plumpness and hydration, is used to make dermal fillers. Small amounts of the gel are injected just beneath your skin, targeting trouble regions in the process.

Fillers have the advantage of making a significant impact on your appearance without the necessity for surgery or other invasive treatments. Your skin should appear fresher after fillers, giving you a well-rested and revitalised appearance.

Because the filler is injected into the skin, the procedure must be done in a clinical setting by experienced and well-trained specialists. Every one of our clinics at DestinationSkin use highly qualified doctors and nurses and we always put your safety and well-being first.

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks when you have fillers injected. You can read all about what to expect from the treatment in our blog here.

How Does Dermal Fillers Work On Wrinkles?

Dermal fillers are specifically designed to reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles and to revitalise your skin.

Fillers work by increasing the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin, which rejuvenates it, smooths out wrinkles, and gives it a more youthful appearance. Because the hyaluronic acid in our Juvederm® fillers is so similar to the hyaluronic acid your body naturally makes, it blends in seamlessly with your own facial tissue.

Dermal fillers are a simple and non-invasive approach to smooth the skin and restore plumpness to your face, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. They have a natural appearance and do not affect your facial expressions.

Fillers adjust your appearance gently as your face changes throughout time because they aren’t permanent. Fillers soften lines and wrinkles between the brows, around the eyes, crow’s feet, and forehead lines and in all parts of the face. They have the ability to transform smokers’ lines and laughter lines.

Deep Wrinkle Filler

The best treatment for deep wrinkles is dermal filler. Deep wrinkles and deeper lines are treated with thicker fillers, whilst fine lines are treated with thinner fillers. The process is completely the same; just the amount injected may vary.

DestinationSkin’s professionals will be able to advise you on the sorts of fillers we use for each procedure and how long they will last.

What Actually Causes Wrinkles?

Learning what causes wrinkles may help you to understand your filler experience a bit better. As you get older, the decreased production of collagen and elastin proteins causes your skin to thin and become easier to wrinkle.

The skin becomes less resistant to harm during this process, and the subcutaneous fat that gives your skin its plump appearance begins to disappear. Wrinkles form on your face when the skin folds naturally during facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. Read more about smile lines in our blog.

Wrinkles can also appear on portions of the body exposed to the sun the most, such as the face and neck, the backs of the hands, and the arms. Collagen and elastin fibres in the skin are broken down by UV radiation. These fibres make up the connective tissue that supports the skin. When this layer breaks down, the skin becomes weaker and less flexible and wrinkles appear as the skin begins to droop.

Smoking, using sunbeds, drinking a lot of alcohol, poor nutrition and being dehydrated are all factors that contribute to your skin showing symptoms of ageing.

Wrinkles can appear on young people; read more about dealing with wrinkles when you’re young here.

Key Learnings

  • Fillers are made from hyaluronic acid and boost your body’s own supply when injected.
  • Dermal fillers are a simple and non-invasive way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and smoothing the skin.
  • They are not permanent, allowing you to control your looks subtly as your face continues to change over time.

There is always some risk to any cosmetic procedure; make sure you consult an experienced professional before going ahead with your treatment.

How to Deal with Wrinkles When You’re Young

INJECTABLE TREATMENTS
SKIN TREATMENT

We all know that wrinkles are an inevitable part of ageing, that they are a natural and normal result of skin losing elasticity as you grow older. But what about if you find yourself with unwanted wrinkles at a young age, also known as premature wrinkles?

Dermal fillers are an anti-ageing solution for just about anyone – regardless of age. The fillers we use here at DestinationSkin are a safe cosmetic option for smoothing away lines and wrinkles, giving you long-lasting and subtle results.

But why do some people get wrinkles at a young age and how can fillers tackle the problem? Read on to find out more.

Why Do We Get Wrinkles At A Young Age?

People usually associate wrinkles or lines on the forehead, around the eyes, smile lines or even neck wrinkles with the effects of ageing.

Dynamic wrinkles, the lines that are only visible when you move your facial expression, like the crinkles around your eyes or the cheek creases when you smile, usually begin in the late twenties to early thirties.

If by this age, you are already experiencing static wrinkles, the ones that are visible even when your face is at rest, these are known as premature lines and aren’t necessarily related to the natural ageing process.

A few factors, both lifestyle and environmental, can contribute to having wrinkles at a young age. They include:

  • Smoking, or living with a smoker – smoking subjects your skin to free radicals which attach to the body breaking down DNA and RNA, leading to inflammation and skin damage.
  • Drinking a lot of alcohol – alcohol is a diuretic and dehydrates your skin, causing a lack of plumpness and volume. It also interferes with your skin’s natural antioxidant defences.
  • Sleeping on your front – stomach sleeping can accelerate ageing, as mechanical compression can speed up the wrinkling process.
  • A high sugar diet – when you eat too much sugar, a process called glycation occurs; sugar molecules in your bloodstream attach to collagen, causing it to go stiff and break.
  • Not using suncream – exposure to UV light is one of the leading causes of visible ageing.
  • Not staying hydrated – your skin needs water to keep its volume; wrinkles quickly follow a lack of hydration.
  • Living in a highly polluted area – back to the free radicals, polluted cities carry them in the atmosphere, and they cause damage to cells, protein and even DNA.
  • High-stress levels – stress produces high cortisol levels in the body, which affects your skin’s connective tissue.
  • Not getting enough sleep – research has shown that people who get enough sleep have improved skin barrier recovery.
  • Straining your eyes by squinting at computer screens or squinting in the sun, pretty obvious this one, all that squinting causes lines.
  • Overuse of skincare products containing retinoids, antioxidants, peptides and alpha hydroxy acids – using too many of these products can cause irritation and inflammation of the skin, especially affecting the skin barrier.

Of course, some people may also have genes that lend themselves to premature wrinkles. You can take steps to alter many of the factors that cause your skin to wrinkle at a young age. Stopping smoking, cutting down sugar and alcohol, staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen are fairly easy steps to take to prevent further skin damage.

But what can you do about the lines that have already formed and are causing you concern?

How Dermal Fillers Tackle Premature Wrinkles

You will find that topical creams and even serums can’t lessen or mitigate wrinkles and lines, but temporary dermal fillers can.

Dermal fillers are derived from a substance called hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in your body. Your skin produces it to maintain plumpness and hydration. The procedure involves having small amounts of filler injected just beneath your skin, targeting the areas you are concerned about.

One of the results that we love about fillers is that they can create quite a big difference in your appearance without you having to undergo any surgery or other more invasive procedures. After having fillers, your skin should look restored to its natural, youthful look, feeling fresher with your wrinkles and lines softened or removed. You can read all about how fillers work on fine lines and wrinkles here and about how they specifically help with smile lines here.

Because the filler is injected, the procedure must be done in a clinical setting by experienced and well-trained specialists. Every one of our clinics at DestinationSkin has highly qualified doctors and nurses on hand, and we always put your safety and wellbeing first.

When you receive the treatment, a numbing cream is applied to your face; then, our expert practitioners will inject the filler beneath the dermis. The hyaluronic acid then attracts water and binds naturally with your facial tissue, achieving a fresh, rejuvenated look.

It’s a short process and you can speed up recovery time by taking your aftercare steps, but as with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks. Always consult with professionals first before having the treatment.

Fillers are not permanent, as your body slowly and naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid. The thinner fillers used for fine lines and wrinkles tend to last 6 to 9 months. The benefit of this is that you can control your looks subtly as they continue to change in the future.

You can read all about what you should and shouldn’t expect from the treatment and aftercare in our blog here.

Key Learnings

  • The natural ageing process causes most wrinkles and lines.
  • People tend to start having static wrinkles in their late 20s to early 30s. Wrinkles forming before this are called premature wrinkles.
  • Premature wrinkles are usually caused by lifestyle and environmental factors like smoking, diet, not using sunscreen or living in a polluted area.
  • You can help prevent further damage to your skin by altering some of these factors, but these may not soften or remove the lines already formed.
  • Dermal, or facial fillers, are a non-permanent way to soften lines and wrinkles, rejuvenating your face for a fresher look.

Dermal fillers are injectable cosmetics that can be used to shape, enhance, or define your features. They can be used to restore volume to ageing skin, rejuvenating and revitalising it.

Our professional team of medical experts solely use Juvéderm®, the world’s number one brand, to achieve natural, long-lasting results.

If you’re wondering what face fillers before and after look like, read on to discover more.

Cheek Fillers Before And After

Cheek fillers are a series of tiny injections of a gel-like formula that increase volume to the cheek’s soft tissue. They are a non-surgical method for lifting and sculpting the cheeks. These injectable dermal fillers add volume to the cheekbones, giving them more definition and shape.

They contain hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar substance found in the connective tissues of our skin. Its primary purpose is to retain water, which aids in the plumping and hydration of our skin. It increases the dimensions of the cheeks by providing them more fullness and symmetry when carefully injected.

Jaw And Chin Fillers Before And After

For both men and women, having a flawlessly sculpted or chiseled chin is one of the ultimate markers of youth and beauty. With the help of chin fillers, anyone can now improve the appearance of this key feature without resorting to invasive surgery.

Dermal chin fillers rejuvenate the face by restoring proportion and shaping the jawline, resulting in a sculpted and balanced lower face. Chin fillers also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and firm up drooping skin.

Nose Fillers Before And After

If you’re unhappy with the shape of your nose but don’t want to endure invasive surgery, nose fillers (also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty or non-surgical nose job) may be a good option.

Dermal Fillers can give you a new look. Our professional practitioners can easily and quickly change the contour of your nose by injecting filler into it, improving your overall appearance.

Filler can be injected above and below a bump on the bridge of the nose to make the nose look straighter and the bump less apparent. A ‘hooked nose’ is another common problem. Filler can be injected into the tip of the nose to give it a raised or tilted appearance.

How Permanent Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are formed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring material in your body. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, binds to water in your skin and integrates with your facial tissue to give you a natural-looking result.

Dermal fillers are not permanent since enzymes in the body break down HA over time. Fillers that are thicker and used for augmentation of the cheeks, chin, or nose can last up to two years. Most high-quality fillers should last for at least a year.

DestinationSkin’s professionals will be able to advise you on the sorts of fillers we use for each procedure and how long they will last. Discover our dermal fillers aftercare blog here.

Key Findings

  • Dermal fillers are an injectable cosmetic procedure used to enhance, sculpt and define your features or restore lost volume to ageing skin.
  • A naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid (HA) is injected under the skin for a plumping or smoothing effect in a simple procedure.
  • Dermal fillers work to treat various signs of ageing and add lost volume and plump up the desired areas.
  • Fillers are not permanent, and your body will break them down over time.
  • How long they last depend on the filler’s type and thickness used and your own body’s process.
