SKIN TREATMENT

Most people think of dermal fillers for plumping and volumising effects in lips or cheeks, but these kinds of fillers are also highly effective at treating wrinkles.

If you are thinking about getting rid of your wrinkles, fillers are a non-invasive and non-permanent way to soften laughter lines, deep or fine forehead lines, or lines formed around the mouth and nose, giving you subtle, natural results.

If you’re interested in how dermal fillers treat wrinkles and lines and which of these they work best for, read on.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are made from a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that your skin produces to maintain plumpness and hydration. The process entails having small amounts of the gel injected just beneath your skin, targeting problem areas.

The great thing about fillers is that they can create quite a dramatic difference in your appearance without the need for surgery, or other more invasive procedures. After having fillers, your skin should look fresher, giving you a well-rested and rejuvenated look.

As the filler is injected, it’s important to have the treatment performed in a clinical setting with experienced, well-trained professionals. At DestinationSkin, we have highly qualified doctors and nurses at every one of our clinics and always work with your safety and wellbeing at the heart of our services.

What Causes Wrinkles Anyway?

As you age, your skin begins to thin out due to the lower production of collagen and elastin proteins.

This slowdown also causes the skin to become less resistant to damage, and the subcutaneous fat that sits under your skin (giving it its plump appearance) starts to diminish. Wrinkles tend to appear on your face in places where the skin naturally folds during facial expressions, like smiling or frowning.

Wrinkles also can develop on parts of the body that receive most sun exposure, such as the face and neck, back of the hands, and arms. UV light causes the skin’s collagen and elastin fibers to break down. The connective tissue that supports the skin is made up of these fibers. The skin gets weaker and less flexible when this layer breaks down and wrinkles form as the skin begins to droop.

When you are young, your skin is more elastic and springs back into shape. As you get older, the skin loses its flexibility, and it becomes more difficult for the skin to spring back, resulting in permanent lines.

Other factors will contribute to your skin showing signs of ageing, things like smoking, using sunbeds, drinking a lot of alcohol, poor nutrition and not staying hydrated.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work On Wrinkles?

Dermal fillers are specifically designed to reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles and to revitalise your skin.

The secret is that the fillers are based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a water-loving sugar molecule that binds water. In your body, HA acts as a lubricant, helps transport nutrients and regulates water balance.

Fillers Work by boosting your skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, which rejuvenates your skin, smoothing away lines and giving a fresh, natural result.

The HA used in our Juvederm® fillers closely resembles the hyaluronic acid your body produces itself, so it easily integrates with your own facial tissue.

Dermal fillers are a simple and non-invasive way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smoothing the skin and returning plumpness to your face. They give a natural look and don’t affect your facial expressions in any way.

As fillers aren’t permanent, fillers allow you to control your looks subtly as your face continues to change over time. Fillers work well on all face areas, softening lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows, around the eyes, crows feet and forehead lines. They can transform smokers lines and laughter lines.

Why do we get wrinkles?

wrinkles

Medically reviewed by Eugenia Bonelli.

As people get older, their skin naturally becomes drier, thinner, less elastic and damage builds up, causing lines and wrinkles to become more apparent and form permanent grooves. There are ways to prevent and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, so read on to find out more.

Wrinkles are natural folding points in the skin. As people get older, their skin naturally becomes drier, thinner, less elastic and damage builds up, causing lines and wrinkles to become more apparent and form permanent grooves. The skin has always formed wrinkles, but with age it becomes less elastic and so less able to “bounce back”. Levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid – which help give your skin shape and firmness, acting like scaffolding – decrease with age too, leading to wrinkles forming around the forehead, eyes and smile lines. Wrinkles can either be static or dynamic and the key is to avoid getting static wrinkles by tackling them when they are still dynamic.

How can we prevent facial wrinkles?

Broken down or damaged collagen and elastin is a primary cause of sagging skin and wrinkles. While collagen and hyaluronic acid levels do naturally decrease as you get older, there are several environmental and lifestyle factors that can speed up that process. It’s not a lost cause though, as there are things you can do to take control here!

Protecting against UV and sun damage

The sun can damage your skin in a few ways. Not wearing SPF leaves you vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays which breaks down collagen and elastin. Suncream shouldn’t just be limited to days on the beach, either – ensure you’re wearing some kind of protection whenever you’re out and about, even if it doesn’t seem sunny! Many foundations and moisturisers incorporate SPF into its formula to give you all-round protection, but we would always advise you incorporate a proper SPF into your routine for proper protection And, of course, stay away from the cardinal sin for skin: sunbeds!

Here’s another element of sun protection you might not have thought of: Sunglasses stop you from squinting in bright sunlight, which is a mini skin savior! Squinting forces muscles to contract and the skin around your eyes to crease, which can cause wrinkles around the eyes. So, if you’re headed out into the sun, make sure to take your sunglasses.

Eating well

Excess sugar and alcohol intake can result in “advanced glycation end products” (AGEs), forming in your body. These are harmful to collagen and elastin, but there are some foods you can eat that’ll help restore this damage.

Protein-packed eats like chicken, fish and beans actually prevent wrinkles thanks to their boost of amino acids which help rebuild skin and collagen. And, of course, stay hydrated – the health benefits of water are truly immeasurable.

A good night’s sleep

One of the many drawbacks of lack of sleep means your skin can’t relax, preventing it from repairing and renewing while you slumber. This leads to less cell turnover, resulting in a dry, dull complexion.

And it’s not just how long you sleep that counts – it’s also your sleeping position which can affect the development of wrinkles. Sleeping on your stomach means your pillow shoves your skin left, right and center, forcing it to crease and etch wrinkles into your face. It also causes puffy eyes and prevents fluids from easily draining. To prevent this, sleep on your back and keep your head slightly elevated.

Improve your environment

Urban life is extremely damaging to your skin. Daily exposure to smog, smoke and fumes really takes a toll on your complexion as it weakens your skin’s barrier. Unhealthy air results in your skin going under ‘oxidative stress’, a major cause of premature ageing. Counteract this with fresh air and anti-pollution skin products such as those that contain Vitamins A, C and E. If you’re a smoker, then quitting will make a big difference to the quality of your skin, alongside many other life-enhancing benefits!

SKIN TREATMENT

Medically reviewed by Eugenia Bonelli.

Profhilo® is a one-of-a-kind injectable hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that the body uses to retain water in the skin while also supporting the skin’s plumping collagen and elastin.

It has one of the highest hyaluronic acid concentrations on the market. It moisturises and lifts the skin, slowing the ageing process and restoring young brightness. Profhilo is touted to ‘bio-remodel’ the skin as well as provide moisture. It can elevate the skin and give a wonderfully renewing impact. The injection accomplishes this by stimulating collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the skin suppleness and firmness. Click here to read more about why hyaluronic acid is so effective.

But as Profhilo is now widely available online to purchase, we can imagine that you might wonder why you should choose to have it done professionally. This blog discusses the importance of having your treatment carried out by a professional. Read on to learn more.

Is Profhilo Safe?

Profhilo® is very biocompatible in terms of safety. This is because it is created from ultrapure, natural Hyaluronic Acid and is stabilised without the use of artificial cross-linking agents. This lowers the possibility of harmful effects.

If injected properly, side effects are uncommon. Profhilo’s adverse effects are identical to those of other forms of fillers and include minor bruising and swelling. The risks can include allergic reactions and infection, though these are very rare.

Profhilo Gone Wrong

If you’re wondering, “can Profhilo go wrong” then it’s reassuring to know the risks of something going wrong are extremely low when Profhilo is administered by someone who is suitably qualified and experienced, like our experts here at DestinationSkin. Profhilo injections, on the other hand, might be dangerous in unskilled hands, for example:

  • If the product is contaminated or injected incorrectly, it might cause serious skin responses. Rashes, excessive swelling, and ulcers are examples of these.
  • Infections caused by poor hygiene might result in lasting face scarring and potentially spread to other parts of your body.
  • If the individual administering the treatment does not sufficiently understand human anatomy, ‌the Profhilo could enter your bloodstream and obstruct it, lowering your blood supply. This may cause the death of the skin (necrosis) and blindness. If they hit an artery, it could result in a stroke.

We strongly advise you to have the injections administered by a properly trained and experienced healthcare practitioner (a doctor, nurse, or dentist). While Profhilo treatments are generally safe, they can be quite harmful in the hands of someone who is not both medically and cosmetically skilled.

What Is Profhilo?

Profhilo is the first injectable hyaluronic acid (HA)-based skin laxity and crepiness treatment. It’s a skin-rejuvenation therapy that leaves you with a beautiful, glowing complexion. With a steady release of HA, this treatment will encourage the development of collagen and elastin, considerably improving the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

It has one of the highest concentrations of HA on the market, and it works by stimulating and moisturising the skin while also remodeling ageing and sagging tissue. Profhilo is appealing because, unlike dermal fillers, it does not alter the form of the face; instead, it creates a fresh, natural appearance and softens fine lines and wrinkles.

Profhilo doesn’t just work to improve the appearance of a single area (e.g., cheeks, lips, jaw line), but rather gives comprehensive facial rejuvenation for a healthy, radiant, and young appearance that will make you feel more you!

When Will I See Results From Profhilo?

Profhilo outcomes can be seen about 4 weeks following treatment and can last up to 6 months, however this depends on the person and can be longer or shorter.

You’ll notice a more youthful appearance across your skin, with fine lines and wrinkles smoothed out so they’re less obvious and a plumper complexion. We recommend a total of 3 treatments, spaced out every 4 weeks, for the best results.

Click here to discover all of the areas you can have the treatment.

Profhilo Aftercare

You can receive Profhilo treatment while going about your daily routine. However, after treatment, we recommend that you refrain from wearing cosmetics or touching your face. This will help to lower the chances of an infection.

It’s best to avoid physical exertion and sports for 24 hours after the therapy and wait 48 hours before having any more cosmetic treatments. Sauna or steamy baths are also not recommended for the first few days. If you have any bruising or swelling, it’s better to keep out of the sun.

Profhilo Side Effects

There are minimal risks with any injectable treatment, including bruising and swelling, infection, allergic response, vascular compromise, and nerve injury, however, IBSA (the pharmacy that makes Profhilo) claims these are uncommon.

Profhilo Lumps

There is a risk of bumps/lumps at the entry points and bruising as well but the probability of this is very low, most people leave the surgery without the slightest sign of having just had a needle go into their face 10 times.

How Long Do Profhilo Lumps Last

These lumps normally disappear within 4-6 hours of treatment, although they can linger up to 24 hours.

Click here to read more about why you should go to a specialist for your Profhilo treatment.

Is Profhilo Permanent?

Profhilo is not a long-term solution because it was created to work in conjunction with your body’s natural activities. It’s made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a naturally occurring chemical that helps your skin retain moisture by stimulating collagen and elastin synthesis.

As a result, the injected Profhilo gradually degrades over time. The effects of your Profhilo treatment can continue up to six months, though this varies from person to person.
