    Antioxidants Uncovered

Why antioxidants should be your new skincare best friend..

Last month we informed you of the effects of the sun, and let you in on our top secrets for staying protected whilst enjoying the summer weather! We love keeping you updated on the very best skincare tips, so this month we’re continuing on our mission to equip you with all the tools you need to keep your precious skin protected from the sun, by informing you of the benefits of doubling up your skin protection with antioxidants!

You might think you’re clued up when it comes to wearing sun cream, and even know the difference between UVA and UVB (well done to you, you’ve been doing your homework!), but do you know the importance of doubling up your SPF with a powerful antioxidant? Let us elaborate…

So what are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that our bodies produce naturally, and protect our skin by stopping the process of oxidation. “But what is oxidation?!” we hear you all ask!… Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, leading to chain reactions that may damage cells within our skin.

If you’ve ever noticed how an apple turns brown once it’s been cut open and left out, you’ll get an understanding of how oxidation works. Our skin works in a similar way, in that when it is openly exposed to things such as pollution, UV rays, chemicals etc, free radicals can form on the skin, which (if not protected by antioxidants) can lead to the death of many cells (boooo). However, antioxidants protect our skin from this process as they neutralise the free radicals that are created within our skin, preventing them from causing damage. Essentially, antioxidants work as the body’s defence system against the damages that free radicals can cause, making them pretty damn special! There are a wide variety of antioxidants however common substances include Vitamin C or E, zinc, copper and beta-carotene.

Why are they so important?

As mentioned above, antioxidants halt the process of oxidation by protecting our skin from free radicals. This makes the job of antioxidants really important, as constant exposure to free radicals largely contributes to the deterioration of our skins health over time. Sadly, by the age of around 30, our cells no longer eliminate the free radicals as quickly as before and we begin to see things such as fine lines, sun damage and sagging skin creeping in (think of the apple going bad!) Therefore we need to add extra antioxidants into our skin to obtain the maximum benefits of this miracle substance, and keep our skin totally healthy both inside and out!

How can I get more antioxidants into my skin?

Fortunately, although our body’s natural production of antioxidants becomes less effective over time, there are a number of specially formulated antioxidant products that we can use to ensure we’re still staying protected from free radicals. Along with wearing a high quality UVA/UVB rated SPF to stop free radicals within the atmosphere from sneaking into our skin, using an antioxidant product within your skincare routine helps to exfoliate the skin, protect collagen and elastin (those things that keep our skin lovely and fresh), and remove dead skin cells. By applying an antioxidant daily into the skin after cleansing but prior to moisturiser and your SPF, you’ll be saying “hello” to beautifully protected skin!
