Lines and Wrinkles

Lines, wrinkles and creases are the inevitable signs of the ageing process, and the first wrinkles to appear are usually: around the eye area – in shallow creases stemming from the outer corners – and around the mouth. Throughout the years, as the levels of collagen and elastin slowly diminish, new wrinkles gradually form and pre-existing lines become prominent and deeper than before.

Wrinkles are the natural folds in the skin that are made when we make facial expressions. When the muscles are contracted, the skin stretches in groves and then sits back into place once the muscles are relaxed. Ageing skin does not spring back easily, due to the loss of elasticity and depletion of collagen levels, which is why some wrinkles are always present on the skin. The biological name of this process is called senescence, which is the phenomena that identifies the gradual deterioration of skin cells with age.

The other factors that significantly accelerate the declination of skin tissue are: genetics, smoking, UV radiation, sun damage, air pollution and a poor diet and skincare regime.

The main symptoms of lines and wrinkles are: changes in texture and elasticity. Loss of facial fat, that also naturally diminishes through age, can also lead to a lack of volume which causes the face to take on a physically sunken, sagging disposition. This loss of volume, combined with the deterioration of elastin and collagen, causes the skin to become thinner, fold and droop.

The main types of lines and wrinkles are:

  • Crow’s feet – Creases in the outer corner of the eyes
  • Chin wrinkles – Sagging lines that droop below the jaw and can develop into jowls
  • Glabellar lines – Horizontal wrinkles that stretch across the forehead
  • Nasolabial folds – Lines that frame the cheeks, also known as ‘smile lines’
  • Tear troughs – Wrinkles beneath the lower eyelid and upper cheek
  • Marionette lines – Downwards facing lines from both corners of the mouth
  • Lip wrinkles – Short vertical lines that form on the upper lip towards the nose – also called ‘smoker’s lines’

We ensure each treatment adheres to the highest safety standards and that any of our anti-ageing, injectable treatments are seamlessly administered by one of our medical injectors. All our medical injectors are qualified and experienced clinicians who are members of either the General Medical Council, or the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Anti-ageing injectables – Botox® injections are one of our most fast-acting, anti-ageing treatments and work instantly to achieve a visibly youthful complexion. The Botox® solution is made of a purified botulinum protein that temporarily blocks the muscle receptors that cause, and worsen, wrinkles and lines. This can be used on all types of wrinkles and on any area of the face.

Profhilo® An award-winning treatment that works from within to bio-remodel ageing, sagging tissue in the dermal layer of skin. Profhilo® intensely rejuvenates the skin by injecting a high quality hyaluronic acid gel into five key points of the face. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body and has amazing properties in counteracting skin laxity to improve and restore firmness across your appearance.

Dermal fillersAnother type of injectable treatment to target moderate and severe wrinkles and lines. Dermal fillers are the perfect treatment to contour undefined facial features whilst restoring lost volume to give your skin back its vitality and definition. We endorse the use of only the best products, which is why we choose Juvéderm®’s hyaluronic acid fillers for our dermal fillers. Juvéderm® are used globally and are the best in the industry because of their high satisfaction rate among clients. We also offer Teosyal® – another amazing brand of dermal filler – which is designed to specifically target, and revitalise, the delicate under eyes by diminishing crow’s feet and dark circles.

Collagen boosting – Using light and laser technology, our collagen boosting treatment enables us to artificially stimulate collagen production and encourage the growth of new collagen and elastin proteins. The biggest benefit of this treatment is its ability to increase firmness in crepey skin and reduce wrinkle visibility. Light-based treatments are also able to improve texture, tone and fade any age-induced pigmentation, like age spots.

EDS Revitalise – A type of microneedling treatment that uses a pen-like device, called the eDermaStamp®, to target wrinkled and lined areas of the face. All our microneedling treatments use genuine, original DermaRoller® devices which is a brand established since 1999. EDS Revitalise is able to target individual wrinkles seamlessly with optimal pressure and needle repetition rate. This is different from other microneedling treatments as it also delivers a hyaluronic acid serum into the skin whilst the needles work to activate collagen production. This ensures the serum will be able to penetrate the deeper layers of skin and make a visible impact in the dermis and epidermis.

The best way to prevent wrinkles is by starting to assess the harmful contributors that lead to a prematurely, or more noticeably, wrinkled complexion. The main causes of wrinkling are from UV radiation, smoking and genetics, and by identifying which factors may apply to your lifestyle can help you take the preventative measures.

Some key things to prevent wrinkles generally are by always wearing SPF and stopping smoking. UVA and UVB rays are emitted from the sun and directly contribute to the development of wrinkles – and other age related skin concerns like age spots – when absorbed into unprotected skin. UVA rays cause dermal damage and are linked to premature cellular death of anti-ageing proteins, like collagen and elastin. UVB rays cause epidermal issues, such as sunburn, freckling and the development of age spots. When too many of these rays are absorbed, this radiation can lead to skin cancers too. Nicotine, and other chemicals in cigarettes, are also found to have a similar effect on collagen proteins as UVA rays and also deplete your skin’s natural glow.

Having a consistent, diligent skincare regime is also important as this ensures your skin is flooded with antioxidants, vitamins, active ingredients and hydrated regularly. The best anti-ageing ingredients are: peptides, retinol, collagen, vitamin C, glycolic, hyaluronic and lactic acids. These ingredients come in many forms, so you don’t need to find moisturisers with all of them in – even individually in a cleanser or toner they will encourage better skin health and an overall healthier complexion. Jade rollers and gua sha stones are also useful to help firm and tone your complexion – whilst also improving lymphatic drainage which helps to remove toxins from the body.

Another way to prevent wrinkles is by living healthily and eating lots of antioxidants and vitamin-rich foods. Vitamin K, A, C and E can all help to improve circulation and may encourage the regulation of collagen.

For more prominent lines, we recommend some of our preventative, skin rejuvenation treatments. Some of the most effective, non-invasive treatments we offer are HydraFacials and skin peels.

Partaking in regular HydraFacials or skin peels can give your skin the professional boost it needs to keep it working at its best. Both these treatments are advanced-level facials that have visible results because of their use of patented technology, state-of-the-art equipment and clinical-level, active ingredients that always improves fine lines and wrinkles from the first session.
