As we age the structure of our skin changes. This is mainly due to the amount of collagen and hyaluronic acid in our skin decreasing. Collagen and hyaluronic acid acts as the scaffolding and building blocks to healthy plump skin, so when we age our levels decrease, causing the signs of ageing to become more visible.

What causes signs of ageing?PlusMinus

As the scaffolding in our skin weakens, fine lines and wrinkles appear, along with gradual sagging and volume loss.

The main cause of ageing is collagen breakdown within our skin and is accompanied by the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

You may think lines & wrinkles are the same, but actually they are not!

Lines are usually small & fine, and occur from repeated muscle movement such as smiling. They are typically present underneath & around the eyes, the lips, in between eyebrows and on the cheeks.

Wrinkles are static & more dramatic than lines, and can be located anywhere on the face, neck, chest arms or body. They remain visible as folds, ridges and creases in the skin, even when you relax the muscle.

If left untreated, a line can deepen and become a wrinkle over time as collagen continues to breakdown & fat is lost from around the face. Similarly, when treated correctly, a deep set wrinkle can reduce into a fine line making it less apparent and in most cases completely erased.

We can help you feel youthful and look radiant with some of the best anti-wrinkle treatments available by erasing signs of ageing with our range of anti-ageing injectables treatments.

In our 20s - Skin solution stage: Management and preventionPlusMinus

Even youthful skin requires nourishment and preventative measures in order to determine how your skin will appear when you are in your 30s, 40s and post-menopause. A greater understanding of the ageing process means people in their 20s are taking better care and seeking preventative action.

The rate at which our skin produces new cells is at its peak during our 20s creating collagen and elastin. This gives the skin its plump and firm appearance, however cell damage may have begun through a combination of other factors such as poor skincare, UVA and UVB exposure, genetic influences, pollutants, poor diet and hormonal changes. During these years identifying problems, address immediate areas of concern and stating long-term preventative regimes is key.

In our 30s - Skin solution stage: EvidentPlusMinus

You are likely to begin to see the first visible signs of ageing in your 30s, caused by the reduction of new skin cells being produced, thinning of the skin, a noted reduction in skin hydration and thickening of the outer layers of the skin. Skin may appear wrinkled, lined, dull and with uneven tone. Other skin imperfections such as rosacea, pigmentation, red veins and milia often become more pronounced. A combination of treating visible issues together with a programme to prevent further damage and ageing is required. Treatments to stimulate the production of collagen and dermal fillers should be considered at this stage.

In our 40s - Skin solution stage: Active ageingPlusMinus

The majority of women will become more aware of visible signs of ageing and of their own inner ageing process as the pre-menopausal years begin. Volume is lost firstly in the upper face, and structural changes present in the mid-face, such as volume loos in the cheeks. Skin elasticity starts to breakdown in the lower face and neck causing crepey skin and lines. A combination of treatments is advised, including resurfacing, volumising and defining to rejuvenate at a deeper level.

In our 50s - Skin solution stage: MenopausalPlusMinus

In the menopausal and post-menopausal years the ageing process is accelerated more rapidly than any other decade. Superficially skin elasticity, hydrating and tone visibly deteriorates. This can be improved by skin resurfacing treatments complemented by an intensive skincare regime. At a deeper, more fundamental structural level, the facial shape changes, which can be remedied by non-invasive remodelling techniques. This redefines the facial shape and restores hollow and sunken areas.

In our 60s - Skin solution stage: Post-MenopausalPlusMinus

Gravity is the biggest contributing factor during these years. Cell renewal and repair has decelerated, fine lines and winkles are deeper, veins are more prominent, and skin has thinned about become more translucent. Skin healing is impaired by a significant reduction in collagen production leaving the skin weakened and lax. A subtle combination of resurfacing and contouring treatments are recommended to have an immediate visible impacts as well as stimulating collagen production.

FAQsPlusMinus

Q: I want to look like a more refreshed version of me but where do I start?
A: Our clinically proven approach is fuelled by reality. We don’t believe in offering a one size fits all treatment path for ageing skin because we all age differently depending on our lifestyles. This is where our personalised consultation process comes in. We listen to your personal goals and work with you to create the right treatment path for you. Your practitioner or clinical expert are on board to explain which treatments you’re suitable for and which will benefit you the most.

Q: Will my friends be able to tell I’ve had treatment?
A: Yes and no. We specialise in achieving natural looking results that will leave you looking fresher and more youthful so friends and family might comment on how “well” you look but there won’t be any obvious signs that you’ve had treatment.

Q: What causes my skin to age prematurely?
A: 90% of premature ageing is caused by lifestyle factors such as UV exposure, smoking and pollution by creating reactive molecules that damage the protein, collagen and lipids in our skin.

Q: What can I do to help prevent the signs of ageing everyday?
A: There are three essentials:

  • Wear a broad spectrum SPF and antioxidant daily, even when it’s not sunny!
  • Invest in quality cosmeceutical products to stop collagen breaking down as readily as it might naturally.
  • Book a skin consultation at DestinationSkin and discover treatments to help you tackle premature ageing before it becomes visible.

Q: I like the sound of injectable treatments. Are the results natural looking?
A: Our philosophy is that treatments should be done gradually to always maintain a natural result. Often, this will take more than one visit. In this way, you have total control over the results and although you will see an improvement after each visit, there will not be a sudden or obvious change in your appearance.

Q: Are injectables safe?
A: Yes. We only use internationally recognised suppliers who rigorously test products and undergo clinical testing.

Q: Who will treat me?
A: Treatments are administered by our skilled team of medical practitioners. From doctors and nurses to expert practitioners, they’re all fully-trained to prescribe the most relevant treatment journey to help you age the way you want to.
