Dull and dehydrated skin is the opposite of healthy skin and is defined by the tired, dry and pale complexion it produces. Many things can contribute to a dullened and dehydrated appearance and knowing the difference between both, the causes, how to prevent and how to treat it, can help you restore your natural, healthy glow.
Dull skin can be caused by a variety of intrinsic, extrinsic and lifestyle factors, where the culprit for dull skin can be down to simple reasons, like lack of exfoliation or sleep, or as a result of more complex issues.
Intrinsic factors, like age and skin structure, may mean your skin is prone to dullness. Age is a big contributor to a tired complexion as throughout the years, your skin gradually loses its elasticity, firmness and moisture, which leaves your appearance looking more lacklustre than usual. Your skin structure also plays a role in how quickly you age and how much moisture your skin can retain. This is often a familial trait inherited through genes.
Dullness can also be a symptom of an underlying health condition such as low iron (anaemia), diabetes, hyperthyroidism or malnutrition. Therefore, if you notice a drastic change in your skin, please be sure to visit your local GP as you may be unknowingly suffering with a pre-existing condition.
External factors, like sun damage, harsh weather, high air pollution and humidity can deplete your natural complexion and rid your skin of essential moisture that keeps it bright and hydrated. Sun damage, especially, is one of the biggest causes of dull skin. Prolonged, excessive exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause long-term damage to your appearance. These rays are able to penetrate deeply through the skin and cause damage on a dermal and epidermal level. UVB rays are strongest in summer and are the rays responsible for sunburn, age spots and, in worse cases, skin cancer. UVA rays are known to cause premature cellular death directly to collagen and elastin proteins.
Both these rays have detrimental effects which not only make your wrinkles more pronounced, and overall complexion look leathery, but also exacerbates dull skin.
Lifestyle factors, like smoking, diet and stress can also cause your skin to appear pale. The tobacco in cigarettes deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients and diets in favour of high sugar, salt and processed fat contents – rather than skin-brightening vitamins – can all be reasons why your skin is not looking its best.
Stress can also affect your complexion and cause you to not sleep well at night which is when the body, essentially, goes into repair mode. During sleep, your blood flow increases, collagen rebuilds and any environmental damage caused during the day is repaired which is why getting a good night sleep is fundamental to getting bright, healthy skin. Stress also releases the hormone cortisol, which can affect the circulatory system and immune system. When these systems are not functioning at their highest potential, you can be prone to clogged pores, dark circles and dry, dull skin as your skin’s barrier is also not working as efficiently.
Dehydrated skin means your skin is lacking water and can be triggered by external factors, like humidity, harsh winds and extreme weather conditions. It can also occur through frequent urination and excess sweating during exercise.
While dull and dehydrated skin are conditions, chronically dry skin is a skin type. It is important to know your skin type, whether you have normal, dry, oily, sensitive or combination skin, as this can help you know whether any dryness, dullness or dehydration is going to be a long term issue.
The symptoms of dull skin are:
- Build-up of dead skin cells
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Increased paleness
- An overall grey/ashy complexion
- Rough and flaky skin
- Defined wrinkles
- Age spots and pigmentation marks
The symptoms for dehydrated skin are:
- Dry skin due to lack of water consumption
- Skin frequently feels itchy and tight
- Fine lines look more noticeable
- Increased sensitivity, especially in water and when using cosmetics
- Skin has a crepey, rough texture
Dull and dehydrated skin are often temporary conditions and can be resolved easily through a range of treatments and vigilant skincare habits. Depending on your preferences, we have many treatments available that produce instant resolutions. Some of them are:
HydraFacial – this is the perfect treatment for anyone looking to intensely nourish and brighten their skin. HydraFacial is a patented, six step facial that: detoxes, cleanses and exfoliates, brightens and refreshes, extracts any impurities, hydrates and then stimulates the skin using LED light. It covers every basis and guarantees brighter, smoother and flawless skin instantly. We also exclusively offer HydraFacial Platinum, which is an elevated HydraFacial that includes an additional skin peel, advanced steps, vortex fusion to lift away deeply set bacteria and collaborations with renown skincare brands to bring you ultra-brightening booster serums. For the best results, personalise your Platinum facial and add Circardia’s Chrono-Peptide Booster to re-energise your skin, or use HydraFacial’s Britenol™ for pigmentation correction, or ZO® Skin Health’s Brightalive Booster® to restore hydration into the skin and prevent pigmentation formation.
Skin Peels – a collection of medical-grade facials made of powerful active ingredients, enzymes and botanical extracts that have radiance-boosting, hydrating and renewing results. We offer many types of skin peels that are a non-invasive, fast way to restore dullness and put vitality back into your complexion. We recommend the Obagi Radiance® Peel which is designed by medical-skincare brand, Obagi®. This peel is a salicylic acid based peel, perfect for all skin types and promotes brighter, deeply exfoliated skin – and has an extra focus on improving skin firmness. Another brightening skin peel would be Medik8’s Universal Peel which can be used regularly, or as a one-off, for a surge of skin-loving goodness. This peel gently resurfaces and maintains brighter, brilliant skin health.
Microdermabrasion – This is an elevated exfoliation treatment that uses micro-crystals to exfoliate the skin and smooth away the early signs of ageing. Microdermabrasion is delivered through a hand-held machine that emits micro-crystals whilst lifting away dead skin cells. As dull and dehydrated skin is a result of lack of exfoliation, this is the ultimate, upgraded alternative to your at-home scrub that works to leave your skin completely rejuvenated. It also helps fade pigmentation, sun damage and reduce the fine lines that make you look tired.
Microneedling – an innovative and effective treatment to reveal your newer, younger and brighter complexion. This treatment uses original DermaRoller® devices that are the best collagen induction tools on the market and can be used on your whole face or just dullened areas. Microneedling works by rolling ultra-fine needles over the face to trigger collagen production and cell regeneration. This instantly refreshes your appearance whilst also combating the signs of ageing. For complete facial rejuvenation, EDS Revitalise is another microneedling treatment that follows a similar practice but includes a hyaluronic acid serum. Hyaluronic acid is the perfect skincare ingredient that dramatically increases the skin’s water retention abilities, boosts hydration and produces a visible glow.
IPL and Laser Rejuvenation – this is a treatment more suited to target persistent dullness and is not recommended for dehydrated skin. Light and laser based therapies can completely transform your skin and are especially effective when used as a pigmentation-correction and anti-ageing treatment. It works to artificially trigger collagen production and is able to reach the deepest layers of skin to reverse many complexion issues, like dullness as a result of photoaging and loss of collagen.
Profhilo® – a revolutionary, award-winning injectable treatment that instantly hydrates your complexion. It works by injecting the purest, most concentrated dose of hyaluronic acid into five areas of the face for symmetrical, complete rejuvenation. It is a bio-remodelling treatment that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin whilst simultaneously improving tissue quality. This is perfect for both dehydrated and dull skin as it physically hydrates and fills the skin from within.
Dull and dehydrated skin are often temporary conditions and can be improved through a simple shift in skincare regimes or regular preventative treatments, like HydraFacials, skin peels etc.
To help prevent future dull and dehydrated skin, we recommend the following:
- Drink lots of water. A dehydrated complexion is mainly caused when your skin is losing more water than is being consumed. By keeping yourself hydrated, you also improve your skin’s natural elasticity.
- Use hyaluronic acid daily, once in the morning and once at night. Hyaluronic acid has amazing water retention abilities and can hold and attract water modules. Using it daily ensures your skin is consistently getting enough hydration from the inside and glows from the outside.
- Gently exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Regular exfoliation can remove any excess skin-cell build up that physically acts as a shield towards light. When your skin is exfoliated, nothing is compromising your natural complexion. Exfoliating everyday can strip your skin of oils and minerals, so be sure not to over-exfoliate as this may make your skin feel drier and tighter than usual.
- Wear SPF daily. Toxins and aggressors are everywhere and can be very damaging to the skin. Wearing SPF is the way to protect your skin’s barrier and promote brighter skin health.
- Vitamin C, glycerine and retinol are other amazing skincare products that have hydrating, repairing and brightening qualities. Effortlessly include them into your regime for beautifully brighter skin.
- Live well. This can be done through simple changes, like sleeping more, exercising, cutting down (or out completely) on cigarettes and reducing unhealthy food intake.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables – it’s always good for your skin and general health. Antioxidants and omega-3 are essential in improving your complexion. Some foods high in antioxidants are spinach, broccoli, potatoes, squash, lettuce and asparagus. High omega-3 foods are salmon, tuna, tofu, nuts and seeds (like chia seeds and walnuts). Dark chocolate (in moderation) is also a good source of antioxidants.
- Have regular professional treatments. Once a month, or once a week, professional treatments just give your skin a quick boost that accelerates skin health and floods your skin with essential nutrients that equip to stay it’s brightest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Drinking plenty of water is good for the body and helps maintain your general health. Yet, if you suffer from dull, dehydrated skin, you need to hydrate you skin, not your body. You may have dehydrated skin because you are not using skin products that target and replenish your skin’s natural moisture levels. We recommend using products that have a high water content and high concentration of Hyaluronic Acid as this keeps the skin young, deeply hydrated and plump. In all of our skincare ranges we always use Hyaluronic Acid, so if you want any more advice speak to one of our experts.
This may be because the products do not have a high enough level of essential hydrating ingredients, like Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol, Collagen and Elastin. Another reason may be that the products you have are not penetrating deep enough into the skin’s layers, making them ineffective. If you want further advice, you should come in and talk to one of our practitioners who can recommend the best products for you.
Absolutely! All of our peels are tailored to your skin and we never use Advanced Peels for your first time. Usually we recommend having an Introductory Peel first before having any other deeper peels, out of procedure. The Introductory Peels are still very effective in hydrating the skin and work to remove any dead skin cells and lift your appearance immediately.
It would depend on your skin and your concern. For Profhilo®, two injections are required as part of your treatment course. Yet sometimes, a combined treatment using Chemical Peels, IPL or Microneedling, may be necessary to completely meet your desired outcome and eliminate the skin condition you were worried about.
