Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy or injection of veins is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of veins.  The veins are injected with a solution called a fibrovein which damages the internal lining of the vein and causes blood clotting within the vein.

In time, your own body will then destroy the vein and it will disappear.

What Does The Treatment Include?

The treatment includes an initial consultation to ensure that the vessels to be treated will benefit from sclerotherapy.  This will be performed by a Doctor/Nurse. The area is then cleansed and the solution is injected into each vessel.  The number of injections can vary depending on the extent and number of spider veins present.

Treatment can take betweeen 30 mins and 1 hour.

How Does The Treatment Work?

The fibrovein acts to cause slight irritation to the inner lining of the vessels injected, this irritation causes the walls to become sticky a

nd when compressed is applied the vessel walls stick together and collapse.

Once all the vessels collapsed, the body can no longer use them and absorbs them back into the system.  As this absorbtion is a natural process it can take a number of months before the vessels fully disappear.

What Results Should I Expect?

As a result of this treatment you’ll have brighter, clearer texture and will be free from unsightly spider vessels.

Does The Treatment Hurt?

Usually only the very tip of the needle is inserted into the skin, whilst this can be experienced as a tiny scratch, it should not be more painful than plucking hair.

Immediately after the treatment the vessels can look more inflamed and angry, this is to be expected and is part of the process.  This subsides within 3-4 following the treatment.

The area can also feel slightly itchy after the treatment, but again this will subside within 24 hours.

Medication to be avoided before hand would be anything which thins the blood such as; aspirin, non-sterodial anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen), Warfarin, Clopidogrel.  This would have to be discussed beforehand with the Doctor/Nurse as the need for medication may outweigh the need to withhold medication and have sclerotherapy.

As with any injectable treatment there can be a small risk of bruising, bleeding and a very small risk of infection.  In very rare cases small areas of persistent bruising known as haemosiderin deposits can occur.
