Injectables Guide

The main cause of ageing is collagen breakdown with our skin and is accompanied by the appearance of two types of wrinkles; dynamic and static.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by the activity of our muscles over time, such as frown lines (glabella) in the centre of the forehead or laughter lines/ crows feet around the corners of the eye, repeated contraction of our muscles such as smiling or frowning can lead to the appearance of dynamic wrinkles as we age.

The second variety of wrinkles are static lines, these are the lines we see on our face when our facial muscles aren’t contracting and are most commonly seen around the nose and mouth as we age. These are associated with volume loss as our collagen levels naturally deplete as we age and can also be associated with fat loss which provides support for our skin.

How to determine the types of wrinkles we have?

If you observe your face in a mirror without smiling or moving you can identify the types of lines that you have. The lines that only signifcanlty appear when you smile or frown are dynamic lines, the lines that you see when your face is expressionless are likely to be static lines. By placing a mirror on a surface in front of you and looking down into it, you can also see where you may bhave some volume loss as these areas of your face will appear to sag under gravitational stress and are likely to have less collagen to give support and plumping to the skin.

Key factors which affect the way your skin ages and can cause lines and wrinkles develop include:

| Exposure to the sun
| Environmental factors such as UVA light and other free radical damage
| Smoking
| Alcohol

Applying topical cosmeceuticals regularly and following the correct skincare regime can help to improve the condition of your skin and slow some of the further effects of ageing, but as we age the underlying causes of ageing will continue to take effect including:

| Decline in hyaluronic acid levels
| Collagen and fat loss
| Gravitational stress

Who Can Administer Injectables Treatments?

Only Doctors, Dentists and Independent Nurse Prescribers should administer injectable treatments as they have extensive knowledge and training about the anatomy and physiology of the body and how it works. The General Medical Council (GMC), General Dental Council (GDC) and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) require all registered staff to comply with their professional standards. As Injections are administered under the surface of the skin using an ultra fine needle therefore should only be performed by doctors, nurses or dentists who have received the correct training which minimises this risk of any complications. Some injectables products are prescription only medicines and require a script from a medical professional.
