There’s long been speculation that star of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Kylie Jenner, has had lip fillers, but this is something which she has always insisted wasn’t true, however she shocked everyone last week by finally admitting to lip fillers, everyone that is, except us.
We spoke to DestinationSkin Clinical Director, Dr Toni, to find out all there is to know on lip fillers.
Q. What is a lip filler and were you surprised at Kylie Jenner’s admission?
A. The increased definition and plumpness in Kylie Jenner’s lips made it quite clear, especially to professionals, that she had used lip fillers, so her recent admission doesn’t come as a surprise, even though she is under 18 – most clinics, including DestinationSkin, wouldn’t treat someone under the age of 18. The non–permanent treatment, which is also referred to as dermal filler, still seems to be a taboo subject and have a certain stigma attached to it, due to the countless images of celebrities taking the treatment too far and showing off shocking results. However, when administered professionally and safely, dermal fillers provide a natural and subtle look to anyone with a loss of collagen and plumpness in their lips and face, due to ageing, or for someone looking to achieve more volume in a certain area, like Kylie.
Q. What does the treatment involve and how long does it last?
A. The filler is non-permanent and made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance found in our bodies. It helps to add volume to areas on the face, neck and hands. The dermal filler is injected just beneath the surface of the skin by a doctor or nurse, who will then massage the area to ensure that the filler is smooth. The treatment usually takes up to an hour and shouldn’t hurt, but patients may feel a sting. The result is immediate and usually lasts up to 18 months. Because the filler is made from a natural substance, our bodies will begin to break it down after about 6 months, so the amount of time the filler lasts in different for everyone.
Q. How much does it cost and who can have it?
A. The cost can vary, but DestinationSkin’s treatments start from £250 and are suitable for most people over the age of 18 – we wouldn’t ever treat anyone under 18.
