Antioxidants Autumn Checklist

Dr ToniAutumn is here and now is the exact time to think about how to replenish your skin after the summer, and prepare it for the coming colder months. No matter what skin type you have, there are so many factors that can affect the way it looks and feels on a daily basis. Things like the weather, humidity, pollution levels, the food you eat, where you live, your general state of health, any medication you may be taking, the type of make-up you wear, other products used such as hair care and so on.

At DestinationSkin, we have a complete menu of in-clinic treatments to help you take care of your skin, but crucially, your daily skin care routine is the best way of supporting your skin and keep it looking healthy.

In this months’ blog, I want to talk about the hugely important role that anti-oxidants play in protecting and repairing the skin. For about 20 years, cosmetic technology has given us a way to effectively deliver potent anti-oxidant molecules into the epidermis (skin’s top layer). Here they can get to work to fight against the free radicals that assault skin cells. These are formed when the skin is subject to any of the factors described above. Free radicals are unstable, charged atoms that dominate cell function and cause damage to the cell. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals and block their destructive ability. Wow…small molecules but big action!

Where do we get antioxidants? They are molecules that are either man made or naturally occurring, found in foods such as fruit and vegetables. Antioxidants can also be taken as supplements, and are available as serums and creams for topical use on skin. Examples used in skin care include: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Ferulic Acid, Phloretin, Co-enzyme Q10 and Idebenone.

We have 20 years of medical evidence to prove that antioxidants do in fact have these amazing benefits:

1) Lines & Wrinkles are repaired

SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E

The worlds first nighttime antioxidant

Vitamins C & E are particularly good as they work quickly to prevent collagen and elastin breakdown. The skin seems plumped out, leading to less noticeable lines and wrinkles. This actually happens very quickly and most people see an improvement from about 4 weeks.

Try this: Brand new, the SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E is a night time only antioxidant and is the first to actually directly boost collagen production. Use it in combination with your daytime product to achieve a complete system of repair.

2) Skin looks firmer and brighter

Antioxidants help to support the production of collagen and elastin by blocking the attack of free radicals and allowing optimal production of the new peptides and proteins needed for firm, bouncy skin.

Try this: If you don’t as yet have an antioxidant in your life, call in to your local DestinationSkin clinic and speak to a DS skin expert who will recommend one from our superb range of products, personally suited to you. You will notice brighter skin in just a few days and firmer skin in 6 weeks!

Vitamin C3) Control of inflammation:

A super bonus of antioxidants is their anti-inflammatory effect. Most skin concerns such as pigmentation and acne arise and are made worse by inflammation. Anti-oxidants help to promote better microcirculation, reducing redness and further helping to even out skin tone.

Try this: OBAGI Professional C-Serum – 5%, 10%, 15% or 20% gives you four choices in concentration, so that you can find the one that will be most effective for you. Your DS skin expert will advise you and then you can always upgrade to a higher strength if you need more action!

DermaQuest C-Infusion

4) Scars will improve

You may have actual scars on your face or neck from past injuries or even smaller scars from acne or minor blemishes. Daily use of high quality antioxidants will increase blood flow in the skin and can really help to soften the scar tissue, aiding new collagen to form and making it look better and much more like healthy skin.

Try this: DermaQuest C-Infusion which combines botanical stem cells with high potency antioxidants. This serum will really energize the skin and boost its repair potential.

5) Enhanced UV protection

An SPF sunscreen alone, doesn’t quite have the capacity to totally block the UV rays from the sun. Imagine it being like a tight net over the skin. It traps and deflects most of the rays, but some can still get through the tiny holes in the ‘net’. Adding a layer of a quality anti-oxidant underneath, will act to rapidly neutralize any free radicals formed by the UV rays that leak through. So you can relax, knowing you are totally protected!

I am constantly asked by journalists, clients and friends what I would choose if I was only allowed on product on a deserted island…I think you might know what the answer is by now!

I want to leave you with a little insider information: the leading skin care companies are investing lots of time and money to discover any new antioxidants that might be even more powerful. Based on how wonderful the products I have mentioned above already are, this means exciting times ahead!!
