Cleansing your skin every morning and evening will remove excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells and dirt, preventing the build-up that leads to spots. So make sure you get rid of your make-up properly each night, and wash your face morning and evening.

Dr Toni Phillips, Destination Skin’s clinical director says: “Without proper cleansing, nothing you do afterwards will work very well! I recommend a glycolic wash for normal/dry skin types and a salicylic acid wash for oily skin types.”

It is important to let your face breathe while you are asleep, so you should never sleep in make-up. Leaving make-up on can lead to inflammation of the pores and a breakdown of collagen. As well as a daily cleanse, having a hydrate and protect routine, along with regular facials such as skin peels, will keep your skin feeling smooth and looking clear. Looking after your skin in this way is absolutely essential, especially if you battle with acne or a condition like rosacea.

Opt for a high quality anti-oxidant serum daily. Dr Phillips explains: “These serums typically contain Vitamin C & E and other anti-oxidants such as Ferulic acid, phloretin.” Anti-oxidants really supercharge the skin cells on a daily basis, protect against daily pollutants and keep the skin looking bright.

7 steps to clearer skin - Leave those spots alone!3. Don’t squeeze!

Leave those spots alone. Picking or squeezing them will damage the delicate skin on your face, possibly cause infection and may even lead to scarring. Squeezing will spread the bacteria and oil from the pimple into the surrounding skin, worsening the problem and making it last much longer. So no matter how tempting it is, leave them be!

Water is an essential, not least because our bodies are made up from 60 per cent water on average. Water flushes out toxins from the body, so drinking plenty of it will help put you on the road to clearer skin. Around eight glasses of fluid a day is recommended, so try to make sure most of these are pure H2O, and avoid fizzy pop and caffeinated drinks where possible.

Eating clean is the key to blemish-free skin. While we all like our occasional treat days, overall to keep your skin looking its best, you should avoid foods high in sugar and carbohydrates. Minimise your intake of high fat foods, particularly fatty dairy foods like ice cream and cheese. Instead, choose foods high in omega-3 fatty acids that will nourish and hydrate your skin, and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin D – or the sunshine vitamin – will do wonders for your skin, as well as the rest of your body. It’s an essential substance for skin development and repair so getting enough of it, both in your diet and from the sun, is key. You don’t need much sun either – just 20-30 minutes of sun exposure can produce as much as 10,000 IU (international units) of vitamin D in your skin.

Despite what we’ve just said about catching some rays, it’s also vital that you protect your skin. Cover up with the right protection – a chemical SPF will protect your skin against burning and aging caused by the sun’s damaging rays.
Dr Phillips recommends choosing a good SPF 30 or 50 that you love wearing. “I know it’s hard to believe, but there are some wonderful formulations that feel like silky foundation and won’t make your face look pasty, or like an oil slick. One of my favourites is the Heliocare XF Gel.”

If you wear a hat for extra sun protection, wash it regularly to keep it from collecting bacteria and dead skin cells.
